I started reading it a while ago, and I got bored really quickly. I thought that seeing things from Death's perspective would make things more interesting, but it seemed to do the opposite. Granted, I didn't finish it since I got bored

Any thoughts? I can't understand why this book is so famous, and I would like to know.

It would’ve been better if it was shorter. I think it was like 500 pages long. If it was 300 pages it would’ve been really good, but it felt drawn out, so it was just okay.
Granted, I don’t remember all that much about it, other than the whole “Death’s perspective” thing and the saddest ending this side of “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.”

Because it doesn’t sugar-coat things and Death’s perspective isn’t necessarily more interesting, but it is different than “normal” books at the Holocaust. It’s one of my all time favorite books, simply because of how it shows the effects of the war on civilians and how not every non-Jewish German was a fanatic Nazi.

it just seems to show that the Holocaust was bad and that some Germans were good while others were bad. it’s sort of a given. I mean, that’s fine, but that’s all it seems to do. when I read it, I feel so removed from the event (which I supposed might be the point, considering how removed Death is and all, but I don’t like it) that I don’t really care all that much about the characters.
I appreciate how the mother is sort of bossy and strict and loving at the same time, and I guess it does have good character development overall… but it’s not focused on character development enough that it makes up for the lack of plot

@UKgirl I know, that’s why I was so surprised when I didn’t like it xD

Yes, it is a given that the Holocaust was bad, and civilians were affected, and how not everyone was a Nazi, but generally people can relate more when there’s a book about specific things like that than just learning those facts out of a history book.

I don’t know if you like history that much or not…I’m a huge history buff (especially WWII) so that’s probably why I liked it so much.

I first read it in the 8th grade, and have read it 3 times since then, and I get something different out of it every time, to be honest. Great book, though I can see how some people might think it’s boring.

Cornelia Funke generally is brilliant, I’m rereading Inkheart for the first time in about 6 years after watching the film for the first time yesterday :)

aw I loved Inkheart to be honest, I wasn’t a fan the first time I read it, but then I read it again a couple of months ago. took me back. the characters are amazing and it lacks all that mary sue and shallow romance and angst things in most books nowadays
I really have to get the next book in that series

I HATED Inkheart. My aunt bought me Inkheart and Inkspell, but I barely made it through Inkheart. I was suuuupppppeeeerrrrr bored. Then again, I’m not really a fan of fantasy novels. The Book Thief was amazing. I cried like a baby. I love historical fiction.

I really enjoyed Inkheart but Inkspell did go on a bit. Inkdeath was good but I don’t actually remember much of any of them it’s been so long since I read them!
