Why do they ask about other scholarships?

My freshman (at college) daughter has applied for two scholarships this year. They asked for "other scholarships applied for" now why would they ask this..
Are they factoring this in that oh maybe she will get this so why give her ours?
OR do they like to see the kid is trying to get other aid?
OR like one book I read said do they want to think oh they gave her a scholarship so she must be worthy and we will too?

I just wonder why this question is asked.

You can ask the how the info is used, but I really doubt you will get a useful answer. They may say it is for statistical reasons, and any number of other things. One reason is that many colleges have merit within need scholarships where they do weigh in what else a student has before giving more.

My D got a very nice scholarshiip for this current school year that was for sophomores and juniors, and I do believe they did ask the question as well. She did have a smaller merit award from the school, and did put that down. Perhaps so that they could indicate, that the other award would be released, as this particular scholarship is not combined with other merit awards that the school gives and is integrated with financial aid as well. They probably do integrate the merit awards at the school to make sure no one gets more than a full ride.

This was for two scholarships that were not with the school. A community one and another one. I just wondered why they would want the info. and how it would impact their decision.

most schools, especially public, will subtract out any outside scholarships you receive...easy way for them to save money...

Like the previous posters have stated, the possible answers to "why" may be many.

The bottom line is how will it affect one's personal situation? The answer can be found in the individual school's policy regarding the application of outside scholarships.

These scholarships were NOT with any school. They were outside scholarships and THEY were asking what other scholarships she had applied for and received. So I read that to mean they wanted to know all the scholarships she had applied for AND all the ones she had received.
But now that I think about it..it may just mean..scholarships she knew she was going to get.
But I wondered why they would be interested in scholarships she applied for..I mean who knows if she would win them or not..so what are they going to do guess?

Ok I looked it says ...list of scholarships applied for and/or recieved. ..so I mean they are asking for a list of scholarships she applied for which she may not even get.
Why would that be needed?
