Yeah, I’m pretty ****ed at myself because I know I can do better but get distracted with everything…we will see if I can actually start trying hard in the near future.

I think if I shared my high school “stats” and my current Cornell GPA/grades, no one would ever come here. I was so good at high school and I am so below average here. I love Cornell, and I want to promote it, not scare anyone off!

Earning a B from Cornell is a hard earned B…there is no shame in that.

For those of you who said the ladies…can you specify?

Recently accepted to the Hotel School, how are the girls there?

Heard the campus is pretty hook-up oriented? How is the dating scene, though?

The campus is pretty hook-up oriented because most people don’t want to take on the work of a relationship in addition to their course load. One of my friends put it best, “having a girlfriend is like taking a 6 credit course.”

Haha…so its pretty hard to settle down in the event that you wanted to?

Regarding hookups, my son starting going out with his girlfriend as a sophomore, and his grades went way way up, partially because she was an excellent student and partially because he wasn’t chasing girls.

Obviously, these things are on a case by case basis, but I really don’t think that having a girlfriend or boyfriend should interfere with your schoolwork.

“ILR seems to be a hit or miss to me. I’ve met kids that are way smarter than me in it, but I’ve also met some that barely knew middle school math. Hotel on the other hand…”

sad, but true. although i don’t know many ilr kids, i happened to run into several kids from majors such as Humec and Hotel who made me scratch my head to wonder how the hell these kids got into college in the first place/ progressing through college smoothly.

It totally depends on your major. It is all relative. Some courses/ majors tend to grade on curves, so your grades will depend on how good you are relative to your peers. Obviously, at a high caliber school in which many are motivated to succeed, harshly graded courses on curves (physics, chem, math, engineering come to mind) are likely to be more pressure cooker than other courses and students in those fields would appear to be more cutthroat/ competitive, possibly due to the level of stress and competitiveness that those fields demand of students.

I suppose Cornell’s widely-accepted reputation as being cutthroat stems from the fact that Cornell enrolls high portion of students who are in science/ engineering/ math track. But, the reality is that no matter what college you go to, peop majoring in those fields are gonna have it harder than others.

I am shocked that the avg gpa at Princeton is only 3.2, while at Harv, it is 3.4. That is a solid .2 difference. Is this due to the grade deflation policy at Princeton?

Assuming equal caliber student body at Harvard and Princeton (which I think is the case), this noticeable differential in avg gpas between the two schools is quite disturbing. It is my belief that just because someone attends school A over school B, one should not be given a special privilege.

So are any of you Cornell students graduating seniors?

^Yeah, it’d be interesting to get some in here.

Only about 1% of Cornell students are able to handle the demanding academics and do any sport.

Many who try engineering + crew flunk out.

Only choose Cornell is you are truly exceptional or just want to work all the time.

Considering there are 1,000 or so varsity athletes and 14,000 students, your math is a bit off.

cayuga how many varsity athletes are engineers?

I certainly recall some, but I’ve no idea how many.

^Nice dude. My Dad rowed lightweight crew for Cornell for four years. I think he made varsity his sophomore year or something. He was also in the Fiji frat (thats how it sounds… don’t know how its actually spelled), if you know anyone from there. Back then (he was class of 86’) there were a lot of people from crew in that house.

If I get in, crew is definitely something I’ll consider doing.

This is sooo far from the truth.

If you are at all capable at time management, it’s completely reasonable to party 3-4 nights a week, play a sport, and still get a decent GPA. I’m not saying Cornell is a piece of cake, but there’s no reason why you can’t have a life outside of school/studying here.

it is spelled fiji I V

short for phi gamma delta
