<p>It is mostly for internships or one’s first job that one’s school prestige (in the major) is relevant. Employers choose where they recruit; they will go to schools that they believe are good in the fields they are looking to recruit from. They may also be more willing to recruit at local universities due to convenience. Students at lower prestige universities in their field have to be more aggressive at searching for non-local companies to apply to, rather than wait for them to come to the career center.</p>
<p>In most cases, after a few jobs, job history matters much more than where you graduated from. However, some areas of employment have a reputation of being concerned with your university pedigree even many years and jobs later (e.g. investment banking, good lawyer jobs).</p>
