Why do YOU want to attend a prestigious college?

I'm just curious. The most vocal group here at CC have their minds set on the ivy league, HYPSM, other prestigious colleges. Why do you want to do so? Reasons that come to mind quickly are the career advantages, advantages for grad school, the "snob appeal", familial pressures, and the higher quality of education (and fellow students). What motivates you to set your sights on such colleges?

Chicks money power and chicks.

I wants 2 makes da moneyz $$$

Compensation for my poor endowment… if you know what I mean.

Well I personally really want to go to Georgetown. Yes it is a prestigious school and it has a name. But I really want to study International Relations and International Business and Politics and Georgetown University has one of the BEST programs for that in the country. I would absolutely LOVE to even consider georgetown as a possibility for my undergraduate studies- but my freshman and 1st semester sophomore GPA brings my entire GPA down (I’m at a 3.6 UW… ) Georgetown in my opinion just has everything I want in a school and has an amazing international studies program.

Although Georgetown is not on my list for my undergraduate studies, it will most definitely be one of my top schools for my graduate studies- no doubt about it.

I think a lot of people (especially in my school) are just really motivated to do well and get good grades regardless of whether or not they want to go to a prestigious school or not. I myself have never set my sights on an ivy league or anything but I have always been really motivated to do well in my academics- like I practically slaved myself over Junior year to get the grades I got. It wasn’t because I wanted to go to a prestigious college but it was just because I wanted to do it for myself… you know?

This, as it applies to most “top schools,” and an independent desire to attend a school that happened to be “prestigious” to large segments of the population. I basically looked at a list of schools that claim to meet full need, then investigated the accuracy of those claims, and was happy when my top choice gave me the most aid.

However, “prestige” was never a reason. Though one of the reasons for that prestige (academic excellence) was.

Thanks tenors :)

Future.

/thread

I hate these threads or people who downplay prestigious universities as nothing “but name”. Reality check. Employers look for prestigious alumni’s much better then non-prestigious ones. Isn’t that obvious?

Or do you think that a 4.0 GPA from a 150 ranked (although a decent rank considering there are 4000+ universities) university is going to look better in job applications then a 3.5 from Harvard/Yale/Penn/Stanford/Columbia?

nothingto, on a whole your statement is correct but there are exceptions. For example, with professional majors (lets take engineering for an example), a degree at Georgia Tech or Purdue or Illinois may be just as good if not better than a degree from Harvard, Yale or Columbia. So you have to not only keep in mind the overall prestige of the school, but the prestige of the school in your major if it matters to your future career (liberal arts majors probably don’t have to worry too much about this).

It is mostly for internships or one’s first job that one’s school prestige (in the major) is relevant. Employers choose where they recruit; they will go to schools that they believe are good in the fields they are looking to recruit from. They may also be more willing to recruit at local universities due to convenience. Students at lower prestige universities in their field have to be more aggressive at searching for non-local companies to apply to, rather than wait for them to come to the career center.

In most cases, after a few jobs, job history matters much more than where you graduated from. However, some areas of employment have a reputation of being concerned with your university pedigree even many years and jobs later (e.g. investment banking, good lawyer jobs).

Yeah, I almost hired Johnnie Cochran, until I found out that he went to Loyola Marymount for law school. shudder
