Why does College of Natural Sciences make students take ALEKS instead of SAT II Math?

I got that Email this morning too! So weird. and I’ve already registered a placement test for Math during my orientation. I sent an email back to ask about the cancellation.

Anybody know how to cancel the placement test registration?

I followed the link and took the ALEKS today. I took Pre-cal this senior year and I think the test was easy. A lot of precal questions. I hit “I don’t know” for one question that seems to be Cal. I got 94%.

It’s not Multiple Choice. Every question requires inputing answer, even graphing. The input system is kind of confusing especially for part of the questions…well…I feel like we are the guinea pig for this ALEKS…

anyway, I’ll take Calculus next year. It’s right for me.

I haven’t received an e-mail yet, but I am going to need to take it soon. Is the test timed?

I took Calculus BC, but I don’t think I know pre-Cal stuff well. Should I study vector, and trigs?

Were there any questions over proofs and vectors?

It’s not timed. But it says the difficulty of next problem depends on the time you spend on current question. the less time you spend, they think the better you know. but don’t hurry though^^

no proofs. i didn’t see any vectors, either. Definitely some trigs.

Thanks for the great input, Vivian!

Thanks Vivian!

Were there any questions on conics?

I took it and got a 97%. I really overreacted. There is quite a bit of trigonometry, as it is an assessment to test your preparation for calculus. I had a bit of trouble with exponential and logarithmic equations but I clicked “I don’t know” twice and did fine. Good luck!

What the heck! I just studied my rear off for the Math I so taking it was a waste of time that I could have used on finals and the SAT. I could have taken the SAT instead if they’d bothered putting this out before now. I could have saved the test fee and a day of work. This is ridiculous.

I just spent the morning taking this stupid test.
I got a 96%

On a scale from 1 to 10, I found this to be around a 4. Pretty simple.

I just don’t think it’s fair that we paid and took the sat math subject test just to have to take ANOTHER test. If it was going by the sat subject test, I would be placed in the highest calculus class easily. I think all the other departments are still using the sat subject math test as a placement for your math course, so why are we the only ones doing differently? they said there is no correlation between the math test and the calculus courses offered at UT, so why doesn’t EVERYONE have to take the ALEKS test?

do i need a calculator for this test? or would it help? if so is a four function good enough or do i need a ti-83?

There is a calculator provided, but its pretty lame to use. I used to ti-89 on the test.

What do I do if I am going to transfer into the college of natural sciences? I am currently in engineering. I spoke with someone and they said I would have to transfer at orientation. I already have credit from AP Calc so what should I do? Should I go ahead and take the ALEKS just in case or should I wait until orientation? If they don’t let me register for classes because I didn’t take the ALEKS then I would be ****ed.

bulletman, regardless whether you have credit or not, the College of Natural Sciences is forcing their students to take the ALEKS. I myself have taken AP Calculus and Calculus I and II concurrently at my state’s university. Unfortunately, no one is exempt.

alright i’m really ****ed off. i took the exam this morning and missed the calculus requirement by like 1% basically because i havent taken pre cal since 2 years and forgot alot of those stupid equations we had to use. i’ve already taken calculus ab and bc and never scored below 96 on any test or quiz so does this mean i have to retake this exam because they wont let me register for calculus?

not to mention my orientation is in like 4 days

I seem to remember reading on the UT Alex info page (linked from the email) that you could retake the test up until August 3rd (?). You might have to pay $4. Perhaps you could review those equations and retake the test before your orientation.

Anyone know what the main concepts and equations are tested? How hard is the test? If this helps, I scored a 730 on the math portion of the regular SAT. I took AP Calculus last year (2007-2008 school year) and I already forgot a lot of it. I took precalc the year before that (2006-2007 school year) and I had a horrible teacher so I really don’t remember that much of it. What should I study to score above 80%? Are there any particular equations that anyone remembers that were tested? I’m afraid that I won’t pass because I haven’t reviewed my precalculus/calculus in a while. Also, is tomorrow the last day to take it? I haven’t taken it yet because I think I might need to study some. Does anyone have any tips/advice on what to study? I’m sure this would help many people who have yet to take the test. Thanks a lot guys.

remember how to write equations of lines, parallel and perpendicular, know surface area, circumference, and volume formulas, they asked some some questions over domain and range, know your trig, solving absolute value equations, solve inequalities, multiplying rational expressions, simplify polynomials and trinomials, simplify radical expressions, evaluate logs. those were some of the stuff that were on my test

I can still take the test tomorrow right? Also, is the internet blocked when you take the test or can you use the internet to look up formulas?
