So in my high school we are required to take a "21st Century Skills" class in order to graduate. Well almost everyone I know chose computer science or business as their first choice. Of course, the class got full pretty quick but why this mass interest in computer science all of a sudden?

That’s where the jobs are.

What are the other options for this course?

Yes, the jobs appear to be there currently, although not everyone has the knack for CS, and economic and industry conditions can be very different four to six years from now.

What are the other options? Maybe it was the least of several evils.

There are 14 different options for the class. They include: 1. Architecture in the 21st Century
2. Automotive Technology in the 21st Century
3. Business in the 21st Century
4. Computer and Multimedia Applications in the 21st
Century
5. Computer Science in the 21st Century (student must have completed Algebra)
6. Engineering in the 21st Century
7. Fashion and Textiles in the 21st Century
8. Culinary Arts in the 21st
Century
9. Journalism for the 21st Century
10. Kids in the 21st
Century
11. Music for the 21st Century/ Chorus 9
12. Technology in the 21st
Century
13. Video in the 21st Century
14. Writing for Film and Media in the 21st Century

I’d expected a little more variety among the students. You know, because the computer science classes are HUGE.

If your high school has a large college-bound population, such students may be attracted to the CS course because it is the one that sounds more “academic” (in terms of choosing such courses to impress colleges being applied to).

All right, it’s just that I felt unique for being into computers, almost like a select club of the tech elite who have a serious passion for them… but now everyone’s in computer science. And then I feel guilty for thinking that they don’t belong, because their interests are up to them.

Most high schools don’t offer programming classes, so since the opportunity came up maybe people just wanted to see how they would like it.
