Why Duke?

I’m sorry, but I think that’s only the prestige of Princeton and the rankings talking.

@John117

Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t. I haven’t actually been to Princeton to tell, but I’m just going to give it the benefit of the doubt. I feel in this scenario, academics aren’t everything, and I don’t want to claim that Duke has better academics when it may not. Princeton has a better reputation; while that doesn’t necessarily mean that it has better academics, they are not independent from one another.

But I love Duke and I wouldn’t give it up for Princeton, ever. (I actually have a general aversion to Ivy League school; the extreme high expectation and prestige were an actual turn-off for me when I was college searching, but that may not be the case for everyone else. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to go to a prestigious school.)

Your gonna spend four years of your life and your entire college experience at one of these places…Duke will be more fun in the traditional college sense (more known for partying, excessive drinking, etc.) Go where u feel the most comfortable.

ha!

…

John117, I am sorry, but I somehow missed your factual information that you provided whereby you SPECIFICALLY stated that Duke is equal to Princeton in the Sciences.

Can you please provide the proof of this?

Because, frankly, nothing can be further from the truth…

this is certainly not enough:

thanks

hint:

the same professors that teach the grad students at Princeton are required to teach undergraduates…are you telling me that the SUBSTANTIAL DIFFERENTIAL IN quality of graduate education at a science department such as Physics where Princeton is ranked #5 and Duke is #30 in graduate school is going to be much different for its undergraduates?

do you realize how silly you sound?

@ JohnAdam12

It’s perfectly acceptable to post opinions without condescending on others. While I don’t mind your opinions at all, your tone and sarcasm isn’t appreciated nor interpreted in a positive manner.

Just wondering:

Seriously, do you have no life? 1000+ post in 2 month, get a life buddy and get off this site.

can we lay off the personal insults and focus on why duke vs. princeton?

from my own, personal experience, the instruction at duke really varies by department. and whether your prof has won the nobel prize or not is immaterial at the undergraduate level since, in all honesty, you’re still learning the basics of the field. it’s much more relevant for graduate students and phd students since at that point, you’re trying to make somewhat of a name for yourself and a reputable advisor’s a really valuable asset.

and this should be another motivation to choose duke  [Singler to Remain at Duke for Senior Season - Duke University Blue Devils | Official Athletics Site - GoDuke.com](Singler to Remain at Duke for Senior Season - Duke University)
haha jkjk… oneweektodecide, good luck with your decision!!

Chie, let me ask you something, why is it that you are making comments towards me and not John117 when he attacked my by posting:

so its ok to attack someone in tha manner that John117 attacked me because he is pro-Duke, but it is not Ok for me to ask for supporting facts to prove his comment that Duke is as good as Princeton in the Sciences?

your post:

gunit, so what’s with the personal attack?

what I do with my time is my business

and attacking me in this manner is not going to prove that Duke is any where near the quality of education as Princeton in the Sciences, as claimed by John117.

so, please, instead of the attacks, take some time to research and come back to us to support John117’s statement that Duke is as good as Princeton in the Sciences, for he certainly is lacking any fact to support his argument.

Senator, fully agree, thanks

no problem. i feel like people get entirely too riled up on these boards sometimes… come on, guys, you’re all strangers who’ll likely never meet. no need to insult/feel insulted by some random text that shows up on an online forum. ignore it and move on. i’d hope you’ve got bigger things to deal with for which you should save your energy (and insults, if applicable).

also, i didn’t see this before, but

as i have no idea about the social scene at princeton, never having been a student there, i can’t agree or refute this comment. i can, however, say that yes, students drink/party a lot here. i can also say that this scene is VERY avoidable and there is no pressure to participate if you don’t want to. the majority of students don’t go greek, and a very large number of students don’t participate in partying whatsoever. does it exist/is it easily accessible? yes. but is there pressure to join in/will you feel left out if you don’t? no. and if you want to partake in it occasionally (which is what my friends and i do), that’s totally fine too - frat parties aren’t exactly “exclusive” here, and shooters (the main club people go to) certainly isn’t exclusive in any way.

@JohnAdams12

You are correct and I apologize. I was trying to be impartial but I failed at it without evening noticing my personal bias. I was trying to make you aware that the tone (not content, because I agree with you about Duke’s standing against Princeton academically) of some of your comments could be interpreted poorly but in doing so, sadly failed to notice John117’s similar tone.

But moving on.

Regarding social life:

Senator Noodle pretty much sums this up pretty easily. While Duke has a pretty large reputation for being crazy partiers, you can have a good time on weekends without hitting up clubs or frat parties. There are always some type of event, whether run by Duke or student organization, that are free or cheap to participate in. :)

As of April 28, 2010, I will be attending Duke with a Naval ROTC scholarship for a potential BME major (maybe a Chem double, but that’s if BME won’t wreck my GPA enough).

Thanks for all the debate (and a little comedy in all of the argument)

Wooo! Duke over Princeton!

I met other pfrosh over the month of April who made the same decision too, but without a scholarship.

Congrats oneweektodecide! You’ll love it here. :)

I can’t say a better answer. but can add that Duke has amazing business, law, policy, and environment schools.
