With Duke, I get the...
-Gothic architecture of Princeton
-undergraduate focus of Dartmouth
-alumni loyalty of Notre Dame
-ambitious spirit of Penn
-community feel of Yale
-geographical student diversity of Columbia
-curricular freedom of Brown
-natural campus beauty of Cornell
-entrepreneurial nature of Stanford
-weather of UCLA
-sports atmosphere of Michigan
-Greek Life of Vanderbilt
-friendly student body of WashU
-social student body of USC
-research reputation of Hopkins

I don't think Duke is the best in any one thing or is perfect in any way. All of the schools I listed above are the best or among the best at that respective thing. However, Duke does so many little things well and I think the finished product it provides is truly amazing. I wouldn't trade my undergraduate experience here for any other school!!!

The scary part is Duke never settles; it attempts to learn from its past, grow alongside with its students, staff and faculty and look boldly towards the future. I feel truly blessed to be a part of a student body which feels a true sense of ownership and accountability for the university it represents.

HYP are finished products and each new student will only be able to add a little bit to an already-established legacy with centuries of rich history. Duke, on the other hand, is still experiencing a coming-of-age of sorts and we, as members of the Duke community, have an unique opportunity to shape the university's legacy to the same extent as the school's resources/reputation have the ability to impact our lives.

Michigan actually has a great football team but a terrible basketball team. Duke has a great basketball team but an awful football team. I can see the similarities. :p

One more thing that I don’t think is mentioned a lot on this forum:

cost of living in the Duke area is very low.

This isn’t something that many students have to worry about, given the required food plans and 3 years of on campus housing, but now that I’m moving to a bigger metro area, I’m really missing my dirt cheap apartment and being able to live comfortably by myself on $1000 a month. That’s something that many schools in the city (Columbia, Penn, Harvard, etc) usually can’t say.

But then again, I’m not exactly picky when it comes to needing to live in a big city with lots of things to do which Durham is definitely not.

2009 Michigan football: 5-7 (1-7 in conference)
2009 Duke football: 5-7 (3-5 in conference)

They’re more similar in football lately than you’d think! (Of course, I realize historically Michigan is far superior to Duke.)

2009-10 Duke basketball: 35-5 (13-3) National Champions
2009-10 Michigan basketball: 15-17 (7-11)

In other words, Michigan basketball seemed to fare better than their football team this year…better winning percentage, especially in conference. I’d take a national championship team and a slightly below .500 team way over two slightly below .500 teams.

The difference is, 5-7 is wonderful in football for Duke, while 5-7 is miserable in football for Michigan. Duke hasn’t had a winning season in football since 1994 and has had several no-win or one-win seasons since. I think it would be nearly impossible for even Michigan’s basketball team to have achieved a similar record over the same time period. :)

I did so to show that because the OP has a (potential) history of satire, perhaps the original post could be as well. Unless the OP sincerely believes that people who dislike Duke do so because they will end up being employed by Duke alums. I understand that some of you Duke students can be a smug and arrogant bunch, but I was giving the OP the benefit of the doubt that s/he was trying to be satirical.

LOL I just love CC. You got sensible people like Arzachel on one hand.
And then you got the jerkoffs like objobs on the other, who make up around 80% of the CC population.

They’re the type of people who are really socially awkward.
