Why I love Pitt

Not impressive compared with whom? Ivy schools? Perhaps. Ever notice that first 20 US News rankings are all private schools? Everyone should consider relying on more than just one source. That is just doing your homework appropriately.

Staying with US News’ rankings, Pitt ranks 20th in the Public University category and 39th in the Best Value category. US New’s webpage also has the Times Higher Education (of London’s) World University Rankings and Pitt comes in 37th out of all US schools. The Center for Measuring University Performance lists Pitt as the 29th overall school in the United States. In Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s Academic Ranking of World Universities, Pitt comes in 37th out of all US schools. RatER Global University rankings out of Russia places Pitt 28th out of all US institutions. Washington Monthly has Pitt 43rd. Webometrics has Pitt 34th in the US.

Average those eight together including the 56th in US News overall rankings (but not including the public subcategory) and you get an average of 38th (and a median of 37). That gives you a much better view of where Pitt fits.

Yes, so at 56 or 57 in the US News main rankings Pitt is underrated. I think we are saying the same thing.

“do 2000 of them really need to exist?”

Apparently, or you’d see colleges closing all over the country. There are a lot of students in the US.

Considering where other rankings place Pitt and the fact that its US News ranking is the lowest, absolutely.

Hey the title of the thread is “Why I love Pitt.” It was a great thread to start. It seems as though the people in Pittsburgh are happy; they certainly are friendly and nice. My brilliant daughter is happier at Pitt than she ever was in high school and that is why I love Pitt.

Hi thank you so much for this insight. I am an internatonal student that has just been admitted into pitts for MPH Infectious disease and Microbiology. Also have an admission into Tulane Univ for MPH tropical medicine and really dont know what path to thread. Where i come from, people are only familiar with the MPH top ten schools and no one seems to know anything about pitts. Even most forums i ve seen are either talking about Yale , JPH , or havard. I am worried about my prospect after school due to the school’s ranking and dont know if i should just hold on till next year to get into an IVY league school.

Pittsburgh or Tulane.

Thank you

First, rankings only give a general indicator of a school’s quality and, as one poster has shown, schools will fall within a certain varied range due to a ranker’s methodology. I really think a student needs to look at the specific program/major/department of interest rather than a school’s overall ranking. As an example, I have friends whose kids are going to schools ranked between 100-200 but the program at that 100-200 ranked school is very, very strong. And they are not paying private/Ivy school prices too. My son just decided on Pitt over BU (a very close second) and NYU (loves the city but not the school as much) for several reasons, including overall friendliness, accessibility, and opportunities he saw during his visits to Pitt. His opinion was based on talking to many current students, which is where you get the best info. There were other reasons of course but the environment was a definite plus for him. Hopefully he will continue to feel that way once he arrives for freshman year.

Jiwico–As an international student climate may be something you want to consider depending on where you live.
