All of you just shut your mouths. Seriously stop crying. I'm Asian and one of the main reasons I decided to go to penn state was that the percentage of asians were 5%. Im hoping theyre cool asians who dont cry about getting B's. Lame.

none of them were "crying." most Asians just really do have it tough.

vdoan, more power to ya.

...most Asians just really do have it tough.

Why? Because their parents push them hard? Because their parents want them to succeed? Because their parents omgosh have expectations of them? I don't see how it's a bad thing.

I agree, sometimes Asian parents don't completely understand. Many times, mine don't. In which case, I explain the situation to them. Asian parents DO want the best for their kids. Keep that in mind.

Its not the college you go to that will determine whether you succeed or not in life. Its how hard you decide you want to work to achieve success.

Well, maybe I shouldn't have said "most." I never said it was a bad thing that parents have expectations of their children. Parents should push their children, but there are limits, and there are certain amounts of autonomy we all deserve. There are some parents who, no matter how clearly you "explain the situation" to them, won't budge. But I know they all have good intentions. What (normal) parent would not want the best for their kids?

It's all good my fellow asians.

Where is everybody going to college? Is anyone considering Penn State. If you are you should really visit. The campus is amazing and spacious, and from what I have heard there are so many things to do. PSU NITTANY LIONS! 2006 Orange Bowl Champions!

It's bad the other way around, too. Here's my dad's perception:

Tier 1: anything under 20k
Tier 2: anything under 30k with generous merit aid
Tier 3: any of my choices

eerrrggggg.....it's hard dealing with the money side of things.

I'm not complaining about my dad wanting me to succeed. I'm complaining because that's all my dad cares about. Thank god my mom has some humanity in her, or I think I would've committed suicide three years ago. My sisters have had worse experiences and have suffered worse consequences.

vdoan- im going to psu next yr lol go nittany lions! w00t.

psu percentage of asians is only 5%..for some reason i thought there might be slightly more.

yea asian rents are all about success , it;s just that many (not all) measure by which college their kids attend. i remember over hearing a convo between my mom and these two other asian moms....to them it;s liek ivy league=big $$$ which isn't necessarily true.o well.

Ouch. That's harsh, dude.

It's definitely a cultural/family thing. I'm Italian, and my father thinks all of his children should be perfect. But idk if that's a cultural thing or my dad just being an ass...

And btw, if you don't even try to get into the school you want to get into, you will be MISEARABLE!!! Remember, you're an ADULT now, and even if your parents are paying for it, they're not paying for you to be miserable, flunk/drop out, and do nothing with your miserable life. So BE ASSERTIVE!!

Again, my father is Italian. I am about to graduate and I am STILL pushing my own adgenda. I want to be a director for animated films, by the way, and am on my way to Grad school. ;)

Parents can get it wrong sometimes, too.

Some of my Asian friends are stressed because their parents put too much stress on them, and I have to remind them that parents aren't always right. Even though my dad threatened to kick my sister out of the house for joining the GSA, I believe she would be justified in going behind his back and doing so anyway.

Experience does not equate to knowledge.

"When it comes to college decisions, Asians will always get the shaft."

Don't asians always get the shaft in the US regardless? ("glass ceiling", the unnoticed minority, in politics, racial biases)

Nice link flopsy. I've never seen those rankings before.

theoneo=What's your dad's problem with GSA?

Yeah. Asians always get the shaft because 90% of them do the same things, speak the same languages, go to the same colleges, have the same ambitions and live in the same places. The Asian stereotype is therefore pretty accurate. You know, the "I-love-math-and-science-and-I-speak-(insert language)-and-go-to-(HYPSM or UC Berkeley or UCLA or Georgetown/Northwestern or some other brand name school)-and-I-want-to-become-a-(doctor/engineer)-and-live-in-LA." types. For the most part, that's stereotype applies to an overwhelming majority of Asians.

If I had my way, I'd go to UMich-Ann Arbor. 12% Asian population!!! whoop-dee-do. (Although that's still too much.)

It's 17%, ihateCA, not 12%.

And you're exaggerating the stereotypes.

My dad discriminates against blacks and homosexuals. And he votes democrat.

That's pretty much it. You're very welcome.

I'm Asian. I love math, but not science. But English is wayyyyy better than both. I don't want to become a doctor or an engineer, and I don't live or want to live in LA.
