Why is being PC so bad?

I mean I agree being excessively PC is kind of lame (eg herstory,etc...) but is it really that bad to have respect/common decency for your fellow (wo)man

No, it's not bad at all.

The thing is, the term "politically correct" is itself loaded, because it conjures up images of Communist party lines and such.

That's just the thing, it's not just about having decency/respect anymore.

PC is a religion of conformity.

Most importantly Political Correctness typically shuts off debate - as generally only one viewpoint or moderate variations of the same viewpoint is deemed worthy of discussion

The Global Warming issue is a classic

Note Time Magazine's Global Warming cover story last spring -which in fact explicitely announced the "debate" over

Political correctness is thought-control.

"Note Time Magazine's Global Warming cover story last spring -which in fact explicitely announced the "debate" over"

But the debate in the scientific community (which is the one that should matter most for this scientific issue) IS over.

There isn't anything bad or "PC" about saying that the Global Warming debate is over because it is among the vast majority of scientists. The only people actually debating this seriously anymore are people who are on the exceptions to the rule in the scientific community and people who have little to no understanding of climate change which pretty much include every single politician lobbying against it.

Climate change is real, industrialization does indeed play a part in it and if you don't believe me ask a scientist in that field, not an industrialist who will potentially be hurt by the regulations put in or a politician who gets campaign money from him or a radical economist who views the environment like he views economics. The real genius of the "Global warming needs more research" side is that they have been able to convince a large number of people to their side simply by arguing that there is no scientific concensus (when there clearly is) and putting these non-scientific "experts" out there to argue against things like Kyoto but never actually addressing the facts of climate change.

As for the PC thing, if you don't like it, go up to the nearest black man and call him a n***er, tell more rascist jokes in public, beat up a gay person, do something substanial about it instead of whining.

I hate how when people complain about PC-ness, they're usually complaining about how their right to call a black guy a ngger or an East Asian a chnk is taken away, as opposed to having their freedom of criticism or objection to unlawful government taken away. They're perfectly all right with the FBI searching them without warrants, as long as they put the minorities in their place.

Yeah, some double standards are okay people. I know it's sounds "un-PC" (ironic isn't it?) but it's true. I worked in an industry that pretty much accepted this as a fact and taught people to work around it.

What do you mean?

Security. Just go up to any security guard and ask them about males arresting females.

The "Coming Ice Age" (actual Newsweek cover story ;http://denisdutton.com/cooling_world.htm ) was the "crisis" a few decades back, oh sorry, lets just forget about that

Professor Richard Lindzen, the Alfred P. Sloan Professor of Atmospheric Science at MIT- he's just a regular moron with obviously "little or no understanding of climate change" along with 100's of other scientists who are routinely shouted down for daring to suggest that proof the evidence does not demonstrate that HUMANS are the primary or major cause of global warming

As for your comment "climate change is real.", no one is doubting a current global warming trend - however I can see why your side needs to confuse the issue

Yes, lets forget about it. That happened in the past, it was wrong and it was corrected.

The hundreds of other scientists you're talking about are exceptions to the rule, the overwhelming majority of scientists in the field believe that climate change and industrialization are correlated. This isn't spin, it's fact. The fact that you point out some numbers and imply that there's some sort of schism in the scientific community is a pile of crap. Just because there isn't 100% agreement on something doesn't mean it's not true. There are biologists out there who believe in "intelligent design", are you honestly gonna believe them against the majority of biologists? No, probably not unless they have real proof. Same case here.

PC = euphemisms sometimes, and I'm not one for euphemisms.

First off, you do have a right to say the N word or any other epithet - there is no right not to be offended. And no, those complaining about PC aren't wanting to call black people the N word (at least, I'm not) - we're complaining about an enforced ideology of conformity (that has been renamed diversity) that is brought upon college campuses by "speech codes."

www.thefire.org

Right, reputable scientists who dare suggest HUMAN induced global warming has not been proven - are now on par with scientists denying evolution.

In the land of OZ no doubt

"First off, you do have a right to say the N word or any other epithet - there is no right not to be offended. "

I agree that forcing and/or coercing someone to be PC is a bad thing and being excessively pc is bad as well, but what's so bad about being nice to one another and not using a lot of offensive words?

I'm always PC--it's about common courtesy. I wouldn't want someone calling me a derogatory name, and I'll treat others the way I'd want to be treated.

Politically correctness is about respect and avoiding offensiveness, not "mind control."

Drew: Nothing is wrong with being nice and not using racial slurs. I don't use racial slurs when talking to people of different ethnic groups.

leah: That's not PC. PC is believing in the right not to be offended, and to legislate or coerce others into the religion of conformity through speech codes and "sensitivity training."
