Why is my mom leery of me working 20 hours a week?

Since you are in a vocational major and your job is in the field, it does make sense to hold onto the job, and perhaps even to work more hours than would be a good idea for many other students.

Nevertheless, you should try to raise your GPA in order to maximize your long term options.

And is there some reason why you have to drive a “truck”? Couldn’t you sell it and buy something used that gets significantly better gas mileage? There are plenty of cars out there–including small wagons that can haul stuff–that get 35+MPG on the highway. If your truck is getting 12-16 MPG, as seems likely from published figures, you could probably cut your gas costs in half. Working for the experience and to pay for school is one thing, working to feed a gas-guzzler is another. Just a thought.

Consolation, even though the truck is a Ford and not as old as the below video, the car means something to me as my dad passed it down to me. There was a Chevy Runs Deep commercial where a guy opted to fix the truck for more than buying a new one.

20 miles on the highway is not good but I dreamed of driving this exact truck since my dad bought it when I was 9. :)

I’ll definitely work to keep my GPA up, Cobrat. As I’m learning more about the new job, it seems I will probably have a lot of time with which I could study if needed. It’s an off-hours, not-even-a-boss-around type of schedule.

Thanks for your replies!

This sounds like a good plan. If the job is related to your major take it! Getting experience while in college is essential! Even if they see your GPA is a little low they could still be impressed with the experience you’ve gotten. On the contrary, having a higher GPA does not necessarily make you a good candidate if you have no experience. Plus you’ll have good references to put down on job applications.

It sounds like it won’t be too bad at all, especially since one of those days is on the weekend. Just work harder than ever before on your days off to raise your GPA.
