Why is Navy so much more popular than Army?

Does this have anything to do with the fact that most of the troops killed in recent wars were Army?

Perhaps. If you looked at casualties on a per capita basis, USMC might have more. IDK if anyone could respond for sure. I’d suspect it’s a combination of factors …career options, location, training differentials, uniforms (silly as it may sound), Army-Navy football visibility and outcomes (at least recently), etc.

One I’ve wondered about is parental push, and what I wonder …Do more Army veteran parents guide, perhaps allow or encourage exploring USNA than Navy vet parents push children to consider USMA. I’ve my own theory on this, but who knows. Certainly not me.

S chose Navy (ROTC) because as a high school junior (when the app. process started) he didn’t know yet exactly what he wanted to do (job wise) in the military and thought Navy provided the widest choice of options.

Professional Navy uniforms will be changing soon, so I’ve heard.

Does anyone have any links to pictures of the new uniforms?

DOD recruiting figures for January 2009:

Army 9,658
Navy 2,948
Marines 3,720
Air Force 2,600

Nooo, I meant on College Confidential.

And do people really think of the marines a lot when they want to become a naval officer? A lot of the work they do in Iraq is on the ground…

Sorry LW. From your OP I thought you were making a general statement regarding the military services. I don’t see where KIA figures would influence numbers on a College Confidential SA board. Maybe Navy influenced personnel just talk more? Long deployments looking through a porthole, confined spaces, lonely night watches. Who knows!

Yes, the uniforms are changing. They are being implemented in the fleet this year, and will be fully integrated by the middle of 2010. It’s for the Enlisted side, though… with the change in service uniform and a push to Marine-like digital uniforms. The enlisted dress uniforms are undertaking a minor overhaul, as well. There is this huge debate going on right now, where the officers and chiefs are fighting everyone else because the E-6 and below service uniforms have been changed to Khaki tops, which are normally reserved for the Senior enlisted and O’s… I think it’s pretty dumb, myself.

Second, I don’t have any concrete statistics, but I’m sure Army has many more KIA’s than the Marine Corps. But with the 10,000 Marine and Sailor surge to Afghanistan this May, who knows. I think the Army is bringing like 5,000 or some soldiers over there as well around the same time-frame.

Now… I think this was a pretty dumb question. Haha… I mean, who knows. Maybe Army people don’t know about this web-site? You can’t really have a concrete reason as to why one branch’s forum has more users versus another one. Maybe CC somehow attracts more Navy folk… I’d say it has to do with the fact that Navy people are smarter and know how to use the internet.

Totally kidding. :)

And as far as USNA Midshipmen looking towards USMC service… of course there are people wanting to go serve the Scarlett and Gold. It might be surprising, but there are quite a few midshipmen who’s goal is to particularly be a Marine officer… might run in the family, might be pride, who knows. And while they do fight on the ground quite a bit, The Marines are making a push back to blue side. If you didn’t know, here’s a bit of information for ya: The Marines were originally created to serve on ships as guards and infantry-men against pirates and when storming ports. There is a MEU (Marine Expeditionary Unit) going out this May as a float around the seas on a Navy run ship… and there are plenty of Marines on it.

And then you have the huge change in direction to Afgahnistan. Iraq is on track to be stripped of all, or most, US forces by August 2010. War is changing, and so is the military.

West Point has it’s own list-serve available to prospective applicants than answer many questions. Hence, this lessens the number of questions about the details of applying etc., instead of asking strangers on an internet forum candidates are able to go to a more official source.

Oh that’s simple. USNA parents, friends, Mids, and interested others simply are nice, intelligent, attractive folks who love a party.

And USNA training blocks include keyboarding and communications courses. It’s the “wave” of the future. It’s rumored USMA are still using sundials and abacussesssss and treating English as a 2nd language.

When you think of the USNA family, just remember that old Honda motorcyle slogan …

“You meet the NICEST people on a …”

Go YOU-KNOW-WHO! Beat WE-KNOW-WHO!!! :p

Hahahahahahha!!! Or, you can realize JAM4 is right; USMA questions are primarily addressed on prospect-net!

Whistle Pig, my good buddy! You make me laugh!
I thought it was because Navy folks whine a lot more than West Pointer’s ;)

Seriously though, you can’t deny that West Point has suffered the loss of many more graduates than Navy in the current WOT.

Amen. Sadly too true. Thank God for the men and women of the USMA and Army. We’d all be toast without these brave souls of extraordinary commitment and courage.

And you’re right. Our lot can be pretty anal … “No, the ‘T’ must be crossed from left to right.” “Well, I think the baby Mid gets hatched on I Day” " What is a whistle pig, anyway?" (a rose by any other name remains a …) ;)

GO ARMY! Beat 'em all …except NAVY!

Navy supporters input needed on Army forum:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/military-academy-west-point/674885-west-point-vs-annapolis.html

On the Army thread FWDAD stated:

Navy people, we need some NAVY SPIRIT on the Army vs. Annapolis thread to set these people straight! :)

Mostly true. The Navy “digi” cammies are for all personnel from E-1 to O-10. From many discussions from the E and O side on the waterfront, many are unhappy because there would be more restrictions on the uniform than the current utilities/khakis and it won’t be replacing coveralls. Pretty much for the operational SWO commands, it is a financial burdensome and the uniform wouldn’t be worn a lot.

It is a financial burden… those uniforms cost a total of around $700 for the 4 sets w/ the boots… and then comes the issue having the rank, name tapes, and warfare qualifications sewn on. And the coveralls in most commands are replaced by these digi cammies, but it’s ultimately up to the command’s discretion.

BUT, I did not know that those uniforms are going to be used by officers too. Good stuff.

On a lighter side, you have to understand that they are more beneficial overall, at least to the un-designated enlisted side. The “Prison” uniforms we have now outright suck, and on board a ship, the slightest sight of paint or dirt makes that uniform unserviceable. With these cammies, most of the paint and dirt becomes part of the uniform and allows the paint-chippers to do their job without breaking the bank, in the long run anyway.

I wear Marine digi uniforms at my command… and I personally love them. These new Navy one’s are pretty much the same, and just as comfortable.

I’ve also heard that the are getting rid of Aviation working greens… Thats ashame

There are a lot of restrictions with the digi-cammies, more so than the utilities. Additionally, if you are painting or doing preservation on a ship, you probably should be wearing coveralls and not utilities.

I saw an O-6 wearing them today with his command-at-sea pin.

Well… that may be the case, but I know a few AT’s that go through those janitors uniforms like there’s no tomorrow… They work around the flight deck… I think.

Anyway, I saw an E-6 wearing one recently… looked pretty sharp I might add, love how it’s directly influenced from the Marine Corps cammies, even down to the little USN logo embroidered in the digital pattern.

But I’m not so sure with the “restrictions…” if you mean as in how to wear the uniform, what to wear it with, and when to wear it, then yes… it’s also got a plethora of accessories to go with it. But as far as it being unauthorized to wear outside of base (except for commuting to and from work in a POV)… that is only temporary. The CNO wants the uniform to be fully distributed and then give time for the Sailors to learn how to properly wear it, and then it will be perfectly alright for little Johnny to strut around in it at the local mall, Army-style.
