Hello,

I just can't get over the rankings, why do some rankings completely ignore Northwestern? On the other hand you see people who compare it to ivy schools and UCs!!

I think it’s a great school.

But this absolute ■■■■■■ from my calculus class got accepted, so I’m starting to get a little iffy. I don’t care how astounding his essays were, or how many extracurricular activities he participated in. He sleeps in all of his classes, comes late, doesn’t pay attention, fails to do homework, receives poor test grades and has an 80 average. This is, quite obviously, pathetic.

But one person shouldn’t tarnish the reputation of a great school.

tl;dr–Northwestern is an wonderful school.

see you people must understand that not every school can be famous or well liked with everyone. While the Ivys + (MIT Duke Chicago) are unanimously popular. The rest are all subject to opinion.

Here at CC, people rarely look past HYPSM. Even places like Cornell and Brown are abused by CCers. Don’t take it to heart. All schools are great. WHat matters is how you make use of the education you receive.

See a list of the colleges of the top 50 CEOs of the world. You will notice that there are only 6 or 7 Ivyers.

@Logarman, I don’t know which ranking you are talking about but two of the most well respected or regarded rankings I know of rank Northwestern above some Ivies…

[National University Rankings | Top National Universities | US News Best Colleges](http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities)

OP,

I see that you may be going to puruse MS/PhD in Civil Engineering at NU and CE department here is ranked 12th in the nation. ONLY ONE IVY is ranked higher at 10th - Cornell.

Err there are some ultra-high rankings recently issued

"USNWR Best Grad Schools 2012 edition:
Schools of Business
The Top Schools

Kellogg was 4th in front of Wharton for many years (including last year).

And we’re #1 for Marketing, and have almost always been, too.

I absolutely agree with everyone, it is undoubtedly one of the best schools, my friends in the US have told me that. What I was referring to specifically, were some European/British rankings, which do have the Ivies and other US universities in the top, but northwestern’s rank is somewhere after 50…but I do know it for a fact that its a great school. My own father’s friend who is a Minister in my country has completed his PhD in Political science from northwestern. And he has strongly recommended Northwestern for me. Nevermind and thanks for the good posts, your posts all strengthen my choice of confirming my admission at Northwestern. I’ll be there this September…Yay!

Okay, I don’t knwo what wacky search engine you were using. The most widely known European/British ranking is Times Higher Education World University Rankings:
[Top 200 - The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2010-2011](World University Rankings 2010-11 | Times Higher Education (THE))

Northwestern is ranked 25th, not “after 50”. You can take comfort in that it’s ranked much higher than two Ivies - Brown (55th) and Dartmouth (99th).

The US is very different from Europe in that undergrad and grad can be very different. They just aren’t the same, USNEWS is probably the most accurate undergrad ranking.

Generally 2 things.

The school admin not being as aggressive as some other schools and location.

One of Morty’s goals is to hit the top 10 US News Rankings. Apparently we might hit it this year.

^Been there, done that…three times in fact! His goals must be higher than that. ;)

^ I would love for Northwestern to rank in the top 7 schools on US News.

His goal is actually to CRUSH Duke.

Seriously? Why, arbiter?

<–Joking.

Brown and Dartmouth are ranked low because in Brown’s case it doesn’t have the breadth of a University (e.g., law and business schools), while Dartmouth is ranked low because it is really a college. It is “Dartmouth College.”

As far a Northwestern “crushing” Duke, please . . . .

You realize that these two examples are at odds with one another, since Dartmouth does in fact have business and medical schools? And Brown lacks those, but also has robust Medical and other graduate schools, while still being focused on undergraduate education? Their rankings are low because they do not perform well on the metrics those (silly) rankings measure. NU does better than them. Equivocate all you want but you’re being silly.
As far a Northwestern “crushing” Duke, please . . . .

As I said, joke.

first of all, the US news rankings are flawed. You can’t compare the quality of universities based on a few numeric factors.
second of all, while Northwestern (NU) may be under-rated to the average Joe on the street, it is held in high regard among employers and graduate schools (where it truly matters). NU has a 70-80 % medical school acceptance rate (i dont know the exact number) and we are the top medium sized schools in Teach For America recruits and a leader in peace corps recruits. our alumni network is amazing. Employers and graduate schools realize our great academic programs and look beyond rankings.
