i am planning on applying to u of t, when i went to their website and checked some statistics about them, i found that for most of the categories the average person to get accepted had an average of 85.7 for science and it gets even lower for arts. people always say its one of the Canadian ivies but even people who took the SAT had low scores and got into u of t. so my question is why is it such a good school,is their something special. i heard the drop out rate is only 25-40%.

In Canada, most schools including Universities are state funded. State schools have to have high admittance rates since Everyone pays taxes and it would be unfair to let only some people get in and most exempted, the state schools here(USA) have at least 50% acceptance for the best, 85% for the worst. The education quality is also lower since student from average low all the way to high intelligence can only be as strong academically as their weakest links. Here, state schools are fairly acceptable, but if one can afford to go or is awarded scholarships to a private school, that person is much better off. Some of the dumbest people coming out of high school here can go to a state school and make it through with a B average and do fine, but some of the smartest and brightest kids coming out can go to a competitive private college here and have a tough time getting at least a B+ which they have never seen in their life before.

Well, it is a huge school. 50,000 undergraduates.
Look at U Mich and U Illinois. Great schools with top programs, but they accept a lot of people so you don’t need Ivy level stats to get in.

“the state schools here(USA) have at least 50% acceptance for the best,”

Michigan will be accepting about 30% of it’s applicants for the 2012 incoming class. The days of 50% acceptance rates are over in Ann Arbor. UCB and UCLA have even lower acceptance rates.

Yeah, UC’s have always been a kind of exception to say the least…and Mich accepted 51% last year, So i doubt 30% this year, that is too big of a jump.

Not really. Here are the stats from the past two years.

Fall 2010 Fall 2011

Total Applied 29,965 39,584

Total Admitted 16,006 16,073

Total Enrolled 6,496 6,251

You might not be aware that Michigan joined the Common Application prior to the 2011 academic year. This year the U-M expects applications to increase to around 45,000. Also the university intends to shrink it’s class size to under 6000 students.

in the US i think there is an trend in applying to more schools, so the number of total applications is going up. Also due to the economic crisis you have a lot of top tier students applying to state schools. UVa was about 36% last year; low 40’s in-state.(on common app) This year they started an early action program, so we’ll see what that changes.
