"Why MIT accepts the students it accepts?"

A small comment: I am strongly inclined to believe faculty are at a terrific university for somewhat specialized reasons, and may be assembled from a variety of backgrounds, which may or may not have much to do with the MIT mission for assembling an undergraduate class.

Ugh, I haven’t read this thread in a couple of weeks, so I just spent the past half hour “catching up”. All I can say is that I’m sickened and disheartened by the number of comments that constantly reinforce the notion that it is ok to admit an applicant who is clearly academically inferior to others who are more than intellectually capable to handle and embrace the rigors of an MIT education based simply on “potential”…seriously? Come on…I’d also pick the MOSP student without a single hesitation

I find your lack of perspective disturbing.

If you think I lack perspective, check out my first two posts in this thread to find out more about my perspective…

I don’t think anybody’s actually advocating this.

It’s just that we all have different definitions of “clearly academically inferior.”

Tis very true :)

Does geography matter as far as increasing chances? My son is interested in Caltech and MIT and we live in Arizona. Will his residency have any impact on his desirablity at either school? Just curious…
