I'm a Muslim, Sudanese-American male who currently goes to a British school in Bahrain. I was raised in the US and I'm applying as a US citizen abroad. I'm curious what my chances are. Here are my stats:

Languages spoken:
English (in school and at home, most fluently)
Arabic (at home, fluently)
French (in school, semi-fluently)

ECs Leadership
Treasurer and Deputy Head Boy [Junior - Senior]
Prefect [Sophomore]
Student Council Representative [Sophomore]

Public Speaking
Captain of Debate Club [Junior - Senior]
Team captain in British Schools of the Middle East Debating Tournament, placed 3rd [Senior]
Co-winner of school public speaking competition [Sophomore]
Tradequest Team Member (stock market competition; team received various honorable mentions) [Junior]

Community Service
Volunteer at Al-Wafa Center (local, Arabic-only center for mentally disabled children) [Junior]
Weekly one-on-one mentoring program with 6th graders at my school (initiated by me, but supervised by Learning Support) [Junior]

Applying to:
Brown
MIT
Stanford
University of Chicago
Amherst
UC Berkeley
UCLA
Harvard
Yale
Columbia
Dartmouth
University of Virginia
Virginia Tech

You could potentially keep UCB and UCLA as matches to fall back on because of that extremely high SAT. All of the Ivies are unpredictable with anybody’s stats, but you are a strong candidate for them all. Good luck!

OMG, what wouldnt I do for SATs like that ! Seriously ! How did you prepare for it ?
Looking at your SAT Scores (which are VERY strong) and your ECs, I would say you could consider UCLA your safety.

And looking at your stats , you probably have a strong chance at Brown and Columbia!
Honestly, except for the Ivies, I dont think there’s any school that’ll be a problem
All the best.

The out-of-state point is a good one, I had forgotten that it would have such a significant effect.

I will very probably need financial aid.

As for the top things, I didn’t really put that in mind, it just kinda played out like that. If you’re implying I may need to reach a little lower, what is holding my application back?

Nothing is holding your application back; you have good chances at all of them. (But remember, UCB and UCLA, because you’re OOS, will likely offer you little in terms of FinAid.)

You may, however, want to include some lower down schools in the 30’s and 40’s. Why? You’ll (more than likely) get into them and receive good scholarships for them as well. It’s always good to have choices. If it happens that you get into your reach schools, but they are unaffordable, then what? You need to have financially viable options as well, which is why I recommend applying to some lower down schools that are likely to offer you good scholarships.

I’m always very reluctant to chance back, because it doesn’t make any sense to me. How can I judge someone on how likely they are to get into a uni if I need to ask the same question?
