Twinklestar: Your suggestion is correct. The Rice/Baylor ratio of apps to acceptances is misleading. The applicant count for most programs includes all students who apply to the university and who indicate that they are applying for a joint program. One cannot apply for Rice/Baylor unless first accepted either early decision or interim decision to Rice. A great many who intended to apply to Rice/Baylor are deferred in the ED and ID rounds. The 200 or so who actually are invited to apply every year are those who already have made the first cut. Although the reported stats range is said to be comparable to the student body as a whole, I have yet to hear of a Rice/Baylor Scholar who was under 1500 Sat 1 or a 750 average Sat 2's. The R/B profile probably is closer to that of the average admit from the ID pool.

Yeah, but how many people's stats in Rice Baylor do you know?
I bet they are lower than you think.

Five: 2 first attempt 1600's, 1 1580 (all from one class) and 2 1540's, one now in 2nd year at Baylor. All passed on top Ivy's for R/B. Perhaps this is not a representative sample--you would know better than I. My impression is that many R/B scholars come from the ID pool, which is very competitive because it leaves open the option to go anywhere and draws a large number of apps from the HYPS, MIT crowd, now that Rice seems to have been discovered.

i don't know if it's representative or not, because i only know one rice/baylor's stats, and that's my own. My point is just that if you know 5 people out of a total of around 130, it's hard to say that that's a fair sample. Plus, just because you know SAT scores doen't mean much - it's not like all you're judged on is that.

It's the fact that you have to do ID or ED drives most people away. If you truly want open options, don't do Rice/Baylor. The off chance that you get accepted to rice but not baylor...ouch...stuck in hot humid houston =)

Javate - to clarify, ID at Rice is NON-Binding. It's like EA.

_______ED or ID?

I'm not exactly sure what you are asking - but I'll try to answer anyway.

For R/B, you must apply either ED or ID. ED is BINDING, but ID is NOT.

Did that help?

when do we get notification for interviews?

late march... you have some time before you should start worrying that yours got lost in the mail.

Actually, though - I was notified by phone.

what is really annoying about some of these programs like Rice/Baylor is that we find out so late. I think that the interviews, if you are that lucky, are April 16th. We have to make a decision by May 1. It sucks how they give so little time to make a decision.

You can make your decision before then, it's not that big a deal. Just say "If I got into R/B, I would..." and "If I don't get into R/B, I will..." Then, whichever happens, you know what to do.

ahh big misconception of mine. Thanks!

no problem!

haha actually the interview times REALLY suck, because scholarships must be decided, and housing must be done...and a lot of that is first come first serve (housing, i mean) so with r/b you have to decide later anyway.

actually, im complaining without knowing if i am getting to go yet. haha.

jenskate1

I am a junior in high school, thinking about the rice/baylor program but not sure about my chances. Could you tell me your stats (SAT scores, etc. but also community service stuff) so I have some idea where I stand?

Thanks.

I'm so glad you are considering Rice/Baylor! Although I am biased, I really truly believe that it is the best combined BA/MD program anywhere. Best of luck, and if you have any questions, post them or PM me.

GPA: my school was on a really weird scale, but I had something like 5/5.4 (although the most anyone really could get was 5.2 or something...basically i didn't have anything other than A's and A+'s in almost all honors and AP, except for health, chorus, and a computer programming course that weren't honors.

Rank: top 10%, although i was really close to making the top 5%, so i think my counselor might have written top 6%, maybe...

Hi jenskate! I applied to Rice, was accepted interim decision, and I was just wondering - about when do they mail out Rice/Baylor interview acceptance/program denials? Thanks!

Thanks. I don't hear that quite often, because in real life i don't go around telling people my test scores, lol. :)

I was notified by phone about my Rice Baylor interview. The phone call came around dinner time I remember. I would guess that you'll be notified this week, but it could also be early next week.
