"Why Penn?" Essay Question

What is looked for in the "Why Penn?" essay question (doesn't specifically say why Penn but it's something like that). I'm completely at a loss of how to start this essay.

This prompt: Describe the courses of study and the unique characteristics of the University of Pennsylvania that most interest you. Why do these interests make you a good match for Penn?

Well, what do you want to do at Penn? How will Penn help you achieve what you want to do?

So, do you pick a major and describe how Penn's faculty, academic programs will help you? It seems like this essay will be really formal.

Talk about what sorts of programs, course offerings, approaches to material, etc. that Penn has that interest you and would help further your goals. Also talk about what you would bring to the Penn community. You don't necessarily have to pick a specific major.

"So, do you pick a major and describe how Penn's faculty, academic programs will help you? It seems like this essay will be really formal."

If you make it formal, you are rejected. Just paint an image of what being a penn student means to you in a creative way. There is no real answer. This isn't a five-paragraph argumentative essay on why you are suited to the University of Pennsylvania. Its a piece of writing on why you want to be at PENN

I'd like to second what dlesk said.

Also, I'd like to add that at a Penn information session I attended given by one of the regional directors of Adcoms, that the "Why Penn?" essay is about painting a picture of yourself at Penn, your attitude, your place in the community and how it is a great fit. She spoke strongly against the "beautiful campus, strong faculty" aspect, so I'd reccomend you stay away from that.

Good luck!

what exactly does a "formal" why Penn essay consist of?
