Why the debate ?

OK, I know people have gone over the NYU vs Columbia debate countless times on this forum, but there's one point they keep on making that I just do not understand. Columbia is "campus life" and NYU is "city life". Fine, but why not just attend Columbia and live in the Village ?
For the record, that's what I plan on doing. Yes, I know, it's a 45 minute commute. So ?
My point is that people seem to act as if there's a line drawn in the sand. Columbia students don't live downtown near NYU and vice versa. Why is this ?
I should add that I'm European. We don't really have campuses here.
Is living away from your university commiting social suicide ?
Or am I getting the best of both worlds (fingers crossed) ?

I don't think it is social suicide but it does make it more difficult. However it isn't too unusual for graduate students to live quite far from the university, some even commute from home if they live in the New York area. Often where students live is dictated by housing prices so they may end up in an area far from university.
