I got into a few of my other schools, but I’m leaning more towards University of Washington than any of my others. My parents want me to do more research about UW before I commit, so I think talking to those who have actually been to UW is most beneficial. To any alumni / current students / other admits, why did you choose University of Washington? What are the pros and cons of UW?
I’m a prospective freshman joining UW this fall. I chose UW because I found it to be the best match for me among my university offers. I would suggest to do some in-depth research on the university to get a better picture and rank your options based on factors you would like to consider (eg. weather, rankings (don’t go purely by these), culture, location (maybe proximity to downtown), etc.).
I would also suggest that you compare the specialities of your choices (strengths of department) for the major you’re either admitted for or intend to apply for (let me know if it’s the college of engineering, I can point you towards some threads). If you know a student who is currently at UW, then contact him/her. Otherwise, do a search on the UW page on “reasons for UW” or something similar, there are already many posts like this.
It’s a large, competitive, and diverse university that is strong in a ton of different areas. It has many great resources, is in the middle of an incredible city, and it’s gorgeous. It generally has a very progressive mentality and has strong professors.
Looking at it from intangibles as a current student…It offers me the chance to spread my interests in a variety of different directions, despite that I have a clear goal in sight for my career. I’m surrounded by thousands of other passionate people with their own unique goals and as a community it’s pretty awesome.
The weather sucked at first, but I got used to it pretty quickly. It bugs some people more than others. It doesn’t bother me at all at this point.
