"Why We Fight"

Anyone ever seen this movie? I'm not sure what to say about it, but if you have seen it, tell me what you thought about it. Thanks.

Well if you haven't seen it I reccommend it. It almost convinced me not to go into the army, but I mean now I know more. I was just trying to get to know as much about our military and government as possible before I join. It's like Fahrenheit 9/11 except it's more well thought out and executed. Back to the other movie, it made a point that our congress is weak and that is very true. They allowed Bush to start war at his own whim, and not many tried to stop him. We need stronger politians.

military-industrial complex

goodbye

is anyone going to respond? I'm sorry if I came off rude early, I just wanted an intellegent, civilized discussion over the matter. Or is this not the right place?

Never even heard of the movie. Besides, I think we're all politicked out at the moment..

I prefer the WWII version of "Why We FIght" which was also called "Prelude to War". Propaganda to be sure, but that didn't make it wrong. Viewing it along with the Nazi propaganda film "Triumph of the Will", directed by the gifted Leni Riefenstahl, makes for an interesting time.

Spidermom,
That was the Frank Capra series, right? I loved watching that stuff!! I think it was a whole series of short documentaries produced in cooperation with the War Dept.

No its the new one with President Eisenhower on the front, it's made by Eugene Jarecki.

Right Shogun! It was 7 newsreels directed (mostly) by the fabulous Capra.

Here's a wiki about it:

IronJohn, I haven't seen the new one but I hear it is quite thought-provoking.

is anyone going to respond? I'm sorry if I came off rude early, I just wanted an intellegent, civilized discussion over the matter. Or is this not the right place?
I believe this is the right place for discussion but intellegent discussion is lacking on your part ironjohn1989. To say - They allowed Bush to start war at his own whim-- is insulting to Congress, the press and our President! Every President who has lead us to War weighed the human cost of war very seriously. History does show most wars began under a democratic President. Your blind liberal view has developed without much intellegence however. Terrorist training in Iraq, WMD, and the exploration of weapons to help terrorists were the reasons for this war in Iraq. Was all terrorism going to end in Afganistan, with the defeated Talliban? When Usam bin is captured-will that end the war? Most importantly where do you want the battles to be fought? I thank God the battles aren't fought on our soil. 911 is the signal we are not completely safe; and fighting in the Middle East is the best solution. I don't want homefield advantage. This isn't a game - our sons/daughters are committing themselves and dieing for this conflict. Conducting a fight by bombing a few places in a Muslum community
( Pres Clinton) didn't stop 911. A mighty force is all these terrorists understand and respect through strength is their motto. Our country and our President deserve support - our Troops need to see Americans support their effort and not minimize the battle by calling this a presendent's whim - that is ignorant and demoralizing and I heard this all the time while "in country" 1972.

Rocky,

Isn't calling ironjohn lacking of intelligence a bit like the pot calling the kettle black? He has a different opinion than you, that's all. After reading your post, I just shake my head. You also are just confused about what's going on over there.

I would explain a different point of view to you if I could, however, I've learned that you cannot reason with someone who holds a belief so tightly, that any other possibility is "unamerican". And before you just the "Liberal" curse word understand not all moderate conservatives drank the cool aid.

yet rockymt, where are you getting all of this intel from? I mean I support the war now since we are there and good things have come from it (ie we freed their people from tyrony). But we started it based on false intel, where are the WMDs?? Thousands of our brave men and women have died to stop something that might happen. I am fully behind our military, but our gov't is hiding something from us. You haven't even seen this movie, you just believe intel and you seem so sure on everything you say, isn't that a not so well thought out attack on me? You have nothing to back yourself up with. Yes there were terrorists in Iraq, but they only attacked after we attacked them. Maybe they were there against the sunnis or another enemy to them? I mean whats next, Iran, then Lebanon? They have terrorists in Lebanon too, they are aimed at our ally Israel, we should aid them, RIGHT? Palestine, Kazahstan/Southwestern Russia, West Indies, Ireland, the list goes on.

We have become so entangled in foriegn affairs that by whim our soldiers could be sent anywhere. YES by whim he (bush) might have spent a few months thinking of his attack. The UN inspectors, could have done more to find nothing, so we could have saved lives.

I could go on more, but I haven't gotten any sleep this summer because of swim practice and my class trip to Germany. So good night and good luck with your next pre-emptive strike mr. rocky/bush.

spellcheck??

"But we started it based on false intel, where are the WMDs?? "

Recent declassified documents have stated many have in fact been found.

Here is a link that has an older article, but it still proves a point. Democrats need to rethink what a WMD is.. <a href="http://www.mensnewsdaily.com/archive/m-n/mariani/2004/mariani052804.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.mensnewsdaily.com/archive/m-n/mariani/2004/mariani052804.htm</a></p>

and more: <a href="http://www.humaneventsonline.com/sarticle.php?id=10101%5B/url%5D">http://www.humaneventsonline.com/sarticle.php?id=10101</a></p>

and finally some of the declassified information: <a href="http://www.foxnews.com/projects/pdf/Iraq_WMD_Declassified.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://www.foxnews.com/projects/pdf/Iraq_WMD_Declassified.pdf</a></p>

Let us go back to Sept 11, 2001 – and the reasons for the attack that murdered over 3,000 innocent people. Although I’m from Colo - Mr. Churchill professor at CU doesn’t persuade me with his “little Ikman” descriptions of those working in the two towers. The reason for the attack was our troops desecrated Muslim soil during Desert Storm deployment by being on site - but wasn’t this a supported conflict by almost all Muslim countries to free Kuwait from Iraq? It seems to me very little reasoning justified attacking America on 911.
So now while our troops were taking the fight to terrorists in Afghanistan, insurgents were training in Iraq – why else was Abu Musab al-Zarqawi in Baghdad – to enjoy a vacation? He was medically recuperating and I believe intel has indicated set up terrorist’s camps throughout the desert. Saddam Hussein must have forgot to tell the UN inspectors about the 500 chemical bombs that were found by US troops in 2004 when Hussein said no WMDS’s in Iraq. I wish to not believe this despicable man, how about you? Now with a lot of sand in Iraq and the possibility of trucking these weapons to Syria has hampered the coalition troops from find but just a few hundred bombs. Another thought – again isn’t fighting insurgents/terrorists in Iraq better than on our soil?
And please tell me what is the gov’t is keeping from us that you know about? Being a Country venerable to attacks prior to 911 should by now awaken all of us that this terrorist state of mind must be contained if not stopped. Current intel has thwarted many plans of destruction in Europe, Canada and the United States. I’m thankful for what Homeland Security, FBI and the CIA and allied countries had done to keep me safe. Our sons and daughters who volunteer daily into all branches of Military Service I believe have made a wise choice and show me a lot of courage. Because we are on this forum many of us have young adults at an Academy that are becoming leaders and protectors of troops. My utmost respect for their endeavors and training and look with pride for their commitments. Now I wasn’t sure what 1989 in your id indicated, is that your birth year? Then what are your goals for college? I’m not going to debate any more so say what you like and let us know what your future goals are. Thank you.

well my birthyear is actually 1988, but my IM is 89 so I was just used to it being that way. My plans for college are kind of up in the air right now, I want to major in Arabic, so after ROTC I would have a good chance of getting into the intelligence field. This way I could gain valuable job experience, so when the army lets me go I can go into the CIA or some other defense agency.

If I change my mind I will study Civil Engineering, become an army engineer officer. Then later on in life I can go into a civil engineering firm.

But, if I like my job in the army enough, I just might make it my career for life. I love watching 60minutes every sunday, because they usually have a segment for the troops. Last week it followed some major and his men taking back an Iraqi city completly controlled by terrorists. They liberated the people there and it was such a joyful scene. The kids on the streets follow the soldiers shouting and jumping. Even the adults are happy to see Americans helping them. Thats what I would want to do.

If I was an engineer, I could end up like that one WP lieutenant who was basically the mayor of some Iraqi city, he worked everything, even politics. That would be hard, but sooo rewarding in the end.

BTW I'm sorry if I offended anyone with my liberal speak, its just that I've seen so many conspracy videos on google video. They really mess with your mind. It seems since GWB's approval rating has dropped, my likingnes towards him has grown, I have seen the right ways in his plan and actions. I don't know why now when we are succeeding so greatly now in Iraq that everyone is turning their backs against him. They have a gov't up, in Afghanistan too, and it can't be for any other reason that his ratings have gone down to 33%. Maybe the new CIA director? I dunno, but whoever said they'd had enough politics lately really needs to re-think that because it really takes a toll on all of us, pretty directly.

I'd say that politics isn't affecting ALL of us in a significant way, and because of that, more people have opinions that they would not have if it was affecting them. This isn't WW2 where you and your family is on rations. For the civilians, how is the Iraq war affecting your daily life? Gas prices? What besides the war do you think is contributing to the high gas prices? Do you know someone personally that has died in Iraq? If we pull out of Iraq soon, and the situation hasn't stablized, how do you think it will affect what you'll be doing 4 or 5 years down the road when you plan to be in the military.

I have a background in intelligence, and opinions movie or the news is not "intel". You might want to choose a different word to describe that. What is actually going on in the AO is not being entirely reported.
