Well, I am an international student living in Japan but South Asian. I've been feeling nervous for the past few weeks about my Smith College application, so I would appreciate it if any of you could chance me so I can feel at peace.

I've had a bunch of problems during high school (which my counselor will explain in the rec) so my gpa right now is about a 3.5. The past two semesters I've been working really hard (my improvement is clearly shown on my transcript) to raise the my poor gpa but this semester I had a extremely high fever during my AP calc AB exam and did extremely bad on my exam. I will probably get a C for this semester.

However, all my classes this year are APs (calc, english lit, chem, physics, environmental science) so it wouldn't affect my gpa too much. But last year I got a C for precalculus because I had a really bad teacher. As for Smith College, I had an extremely good interview with an alumna and I believe I wrote a great application essay that would appeal to them. My extracurriculars are pretty good as well. I've personally met the person who will read my essay as well. What do you believe my chances are for smith?

I am also a minority and a first generation college student. By the end of high school, I would have 10 AP credits in total.

Thanks for chancing me!!By the way, which of my essay topics did you like?? The one about me learning to appreciate my father or the misadventures one??

I’m not all to familiar with Smith but, from what I know, it is probably a target for you and you have a decent shot at acceptance especially with minority and 1st gen status. Good luck!!

Listen, don’t worry and just try your best. If you panic and think about the worst, it will happen. Stay positive and have faith in yourself and God.

I do believe you have a chance at Smith! Don’t worry!

Ah, okay. I was gonna say, SAT scores are usually a good indicator of one’s admission in superficial manner (without critically analyzing every facet of it).

The remaining part of your post doesn’t include any EC’s, leadership, or volunteer though. What about employment? Those can “somewhat” compensate for mediocre GPA.

I would say you have a very high chance, but then I saw your SAT’s, so I’m going to put that down to just a pretty decent chance. Don’t worry man, just keep hoping, and i’m sure it’ll pull through

your 520 CR is well below their range, but your first gen status will help you out. if your essays were good, I’d say you would have a decent shot considering the school has a high acceptance rate.

Thank you guys for your responses! I will be retaking my SATs this weekend to improve my CR score. I’m aiming for a 600 or above. I do speak 5 languages while English being my third language and I believe that’s the reason I can’t seem to be able to score so high on the critical reading. But I will definitely work hard to raise that score.

Hey, it’s my understanding that standardized test scores are required to send to Smith. Correct me if I’m wrong there. Are those SAT scores the ones you sent?

520 CR puts you below the 25% for Smith, but I’m pretty sure that a 650 puts you near 75%.
A 3.5 GPA is decent, especially with the course rigor. Is that GPA weighted or unweighted? Also, having a hold of 5 different languages is definitely impressive, and I’m pretty sure Smith typically values stuff like that over numbers. Like numbers set a low threshold, but the other stuff about you gets you in.

I think you have an above average chance of getting in. Would guess that you’re in.

I think you can make it. Your GPA is good and if you do better on your SATs then you should be all right. Also, if your counselor explains your situation, then it may help you. Good luck.
