Are there any activities for the non-drinker? I keep reading about the heavy drinking scene, which I know is at every college, but is it stronger here because of its isolation? I am just wondering if someone not into the party scene can survive. The academics are very appealing and the campus looks beautiful. Also, I noticed the freshman retention rate is a relatively low 87-88%, any reason for that? Thanks for any feedback

I am probably not the best person to answer this but I’ll try. I know there are students at Sewanee who don’t drink and are members of frats who do quite well socially. There are also students who aren’t members of frats that do well socially. Although many students do drink my understanding is that it is usually on the weekends.

Sewanee is a very isolated college. Everything is right there on the main street. Campus, police station, professors’ homes, cafe, everything.

The campus is beautiful and there is plenty to do on campus. It just depends on you. On the weekend kids are usually hanging out at the frat houses because there really aren’t any bars around.

My understanding of the frats is that they are pretty open. You don’t have to be a member to hang out and you certainly don’t have to drink to hang out.
