I’m an IE major and my school does a Green Belt Six Sigma certification for $500. When you get out of school they said it quadruples because you’re no longer a student.
I was wondering if the certification would help me get an internship or if I’d use it after college?
It can help for “some” internships (Industrial Engineering). If you can afford it, it’s something extra to add to a resume, but don’t expect it to be a magic bullet. My daughter took it a year or two ago (the one sponsored by the national IIE office), and found it informative.
It could get you past a screen for an interview. Some companies put a lot of stock in this, others less so. But it is a useful framework for addressing issues in certain types of workplaces. If it fits into your schedule and you have the $, it could be helpful.
From my experience, a knowledge (and a certification proves that knowledge) improves your chances more at the larger companies. The larger companies are more likely to have the overhead budgets to educate their employees in such techniques. The knowledge is still useful at small companies (maybe even more so) but they are generally less aware of the details of those skills and so rank its importance a little lower.
The kicker is that the larger companies will be the ones to have strict minimum GPA requirements and many times even higher GPA gates due to the number of applicants (in other words, because they can).
So, IMHO, if you’ve got a 3.5 ish or higher GPA and want to work for a larger company, then it would be worth it. It might help you get in the door for an interview. It may still be worth it otherwise, just maybe not as much. It would not be worth it, however, if it delays your entry into the job market. The companies that value such a certificate will typically have programs in existence to get them thru the company, many times on their time and their dime.
Undoubtedly Yes! Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification will definitely boost your career. To add Six Sigma Certification to your resume proves your commitment to improving your business acumen and analytical skills, as well as improving the business where you work. Lean Six Sigma Green Belt is a professional who is well versed in the core to advanced elements of Lean Six Sigma Methodology, who leads improvement projects and/or serves as a team member as a part of more complex improvement projects lead by a Certified Black Belt.
Lol. Just noticed that but… Others do follow it. My son’s engineering internship last year was canceled due to covid. So he did the green belt six sigma amongst others things that summer. He got it through his engineering association with… A great student discount after joining as a student. His job offer did mention the certification during the interview phase and they were glad he had it… It was meaningful for them. So for others reading it, I don’t see it as a negative at all.
