I see rhandco. Thanks for clearing that up. I assumed that it meant that the other universities will take issue with the fact that they were not the the first choice.
I don’t entirely agree that you have to apply early to be taken seriously.
Aha. We really don’t have many awards in here, other than the national olympiades which are very risky to study for, because if you fail, you have probably lost the college entrance exam as well, because here, in order to study for a olympiad you have to forfeit almost all classes.
So, I am guessing that the only things that can be used to compare me to others are standardized scores and essays. Is that correct? Because I called Harvard admission office and asked about this, and they said that they will only asses me in regards to my opportunities.
@Lookingforward who said such a thing?
The main reason I want to ea is to get the information quicker
I am guessing that you deduced that from rhandco saying that you have a better chance of you apply ea?
The comments about first preference. Early apps do have a slight advantage. But not applying early will not shut you out of other schools.
@gibby But there are barely any international students applying and they take into consideration that he didn’t have the same opportunities as other students here in the U.S where everything is set on a platter for us. So if anything he has a better chance. What im trying to say is that everyone that applies are qualified like him but since he is from iran he stands out especially since his SAT score is so high. While most international students have low ones. I would put my money in him getting in.
^^ He has taken the SAT yet. He said he “plans” on getting a 2300+.
Despite your self-confidence, you are not displaying the kind of writing ability that makes a successful Harvard essay.
Thanks for the replies.
@Falcon1, we are assuming that I manage to live up to my expectations.
I am studying for the exam, and I am going for a full mark on the practice tests. This way, even if I score ,say, 100 scores lower,it would still be good. Please correct me if I am wrong.
@Justonedad, can you please give a more detailed explanation of what you mean?
Do you mean grammatically, or is the prose not good enough?
I do not think forum posts are a good measure of one’s writing ability
“I am currently thinking about an essay that elaborates on why I chose this essay, and does portray a lot of my personal flaws and strengths. Will speaking of my perfectionism be held against me?”
I meant to say :"I am currently thinking about an essay that elaborates on why I chose this major and how I came to this decisions. "
Really? Why not? It’s communication, isn’t it?
Exactly, because the objective is to transport a Message as quickly as possible, while adhering to grammatical rules.
The purpose of an essay, however is to convey the message as elegantly as possible.
You did not answer the main question.
What makes you believe that my writing ability is lacking?
“and how I came to this decisions”
It’s “this decision” or "these decisions".
It was a typo. it was meant to be singular, which is obvious because I am talking about my choice .
Also, this further proves my point, that speed is main goal of a forum post. If I was writing an essay, I would have checked it for errors. But since it was a mere forum post, I saw no harm in not checking for such minor errors.
On a more related note, if that is how you decided that my writing ability is mediocre, I really don’t know how to respond to you.
Hi! I just read through this thread and I think what JustOneDad may mean about your writing ability being lacking is that your command of English, while perfectly fine and understandable, sounds stilted and awkward. Technically most is grammatically correct, but your phrasing is still strange and doesn’t flow very well. I’m sure this could be remedied with edits by those who speak English as their first language on your essays, though, and it isn’t cause for concern Just trying to clarify.
@skgriffin Thanks for clearing that up.
Can you please make an example ?
It would be nice if you could also phrase it in a way that is more appropriate.
Also, what do you mean by awkward? Is my phrasing too …old fashioned?
I’ll attempt to explain by re-phrasing something you said earlier–it’s mostly your word choice, you pick words that make sense but aren’t the best words for the situation. And no, your style of writing isn’t too old fashioned. The awkwardness is often manifested through your phrasing–you sometimes use phrases that many people use but change a word or two, making them sound strange.
Example: I have received my answer, and I believe that if I want to ask more questions, I need to open a new thread.
Also, will having my uncle who is a Canadian citizen co-sign a loan help in such an event?
I was waiting until August for the new questions, but I will do as per your instructions.
“In such an event” would likely be “In such a situation/instance”
“I will do as per your instructions” would likely be “I will proceed as per your instructions” or “I will act as per your instructions,” but the phrase “as per your instructions” is clunky and antiquated and isn’t often used in general.
Also, the “scarce presence” comment–that would more likely be a phrase that included “underrepresented” or something along those lines. I hope this helps! It’s just little things that make your phrasing sound stilted, but it’s not a big deal and can easily be fixed if you just have a native English speaker look over your essays for weird phrasing. You’re basically fine. Good luck
Thank you. I understand now.
Also, the part with “as per instructions” was meant to sound antiquated.
Thanks anyway, I’ll work on that. I probably should read some English books that are not classics. I am sub - consciously copying them, and not in a good way. Any recommendedations would be nice. Sorry if it is off-thread .
Here’s my experience:
My daughter applied to Yale SCEA as Salutatorian from Stuyvesant High School (academically ranked 2nd in her class of 860 students) with a 97.8 unweighted GPA, a 34 ACT, 6 AP’s all 5’s and 6 SAT Subject tests all 750+. She was deferred SCEA, then rejected in the RD round. She was also waitlisted at Princeton, and accepted to SUNY Binghamton, Georgetown, Northwestern and Harvard, where she graduated last year Phi Beta Kappa, Magna Cum Laude. (Did Yale make a mistake in rejecting her? Maybe. But, do they care? No.)
My son applied to Yale SCEA from Stuyvesant High School (academically ranked about 20th in his class of 900 students) with a 96.7 unweighted GPA, a 36 ACT, 8 AP’s all 5’s and 6 SAT Subject tests all 750+. He was accepted in the SCEA round and graduated this year Cum Laude. He was also accepted to 10 other colleges including SUNY Binghamton, Georgetown, Boston College, Pomona, Middlebury, Williams, Vanderbilt, Dartmouth, Brown, and Princeton. His only rejection was at Harvard, the college his sister was attending. (Did Harvard make a mistake in rejecting him? Maybe. But, do they care? No.)
With that in mind, here is what I know:
- Even with a top GPA and high test scores, it's impossible to predict your chances at any one college.
- If you have a top GPA and high test scores, so long as you apply to a broad range of safety, target and reach schools, you will be accepted to some wonderful colleges.
- The higher your test score, the more likely you are to be accepted to a broad range of colleges. But even with a perfect test score, it's impossible to predict where you might be accepted or rejected. Admissions uses a student's essay, teacher recommendations, guidance counselor report, and interview report to help them choose one high performing student over another. And as that criteria is subjective, what one school may love, another may feel meh about.
IMHO, it’s rather pointless to continue this thread based upon a “predicted test score.” Once you have an official test score, please repost, but until then all your hopes and dreams are really just conjecture.
