I am a junior in high school, and have a 3.9 our of 4.0 gpa weighted at my school with a pretty difficult schedule. I have good extra curriculors, but this year I tried out for the varsity badminton team with no prior experience. I have quickly improved and have became one of the top players at my school. This summer, I am looking at several high level badminton camps, but I have a question before I put Badminton as the focus of this summer: Will being very good at badminton help my chances into getting in to schools such as Duke, UVA, Umich, NYU? Could I get in as like a badminton player but they don't give a scholarship, just accept me for being good? Are there opportunities for scholarships for badminton at good colleges? Thanks.

You might get credit for showing passion for badminton, but it certainly won’t get you any scholarship money.

If it is not one of the major sports, it would be hard to get recruited and scholarships. Particularly, you will have only 1-2 years of experience. Anyway, you should choose a sport or a club that you are interested in, not for college admission.

It appears you need to be female, and then really want to go to school in CA

You should research which (if any) schools have varsity badminton teams (where they might recruit athletes) or at least a strong club program (where you won’t be recruited but can maybe play at a high level).

Yeah I played on the U19 National team for ultimate frisbee and I’m pretty sure it had very little effect on admissions or financial aid. It may be different for badminton though. Good luck!

I think Badminton is cool…my D knows a guy who plays on the Emory University team and they travel around…while I don’t know of scholarships, I would think that it would help a strong student with admissions.

Assuming that no athletic recruiting is involved, the value of it as an EC likely has a lot to do with your level of achievement in it. E.g. winning the state championship would be more impressive than just being the best player in your high school.
