Personally, I think it would be great; this would bring in more applicants from different economic brackets. Although I hope that if the do go the no-loans route, it isnt just for Maine students–it should be for everyone.

I think the no-loan thing is great. They're already doing it for National Merit Finalists at Bowdoin, so if they could extend it to everyone, great.

My problem is that, even at a no-loan school like Williams or Amherst ("Students graduate from Amherst with no debt" -their website), I'll still need to take out loans. Our EFC is nothing NEAR what my folks can pay, because, though they make decent money, they're still massively in debt from grad school, sicknesses, and having kids young. So it sucks.

Pomona, Colby and Swarthmore have joined...yet no answer from bowdoin...

Bowdoin should at least consider having a loan cap and eliminating the parent contribution, if they are worried about spending.

It worked for Middlebury.

Maybe what they need is people calling them and emailing them about their "no-loans" program, and maybe, just maybe, they will understand that it is on high demand.

They have to do it. I heard the trustees are doing a full review of financial aid in the January meeting and will probably decide on it then. As the highest ranked college in Maine they can't be outdone by lower-ranked schools. Sad but true.

Thats what I was thinking, as well. Does anyone else know anything about the review of financial aid at bowdoin, and about when we will know their decision?

^ I don't know the answer to your question :) but I agree that in order for Bowdoin to be competitive and to get the best students, they need to join other schools and adopt the no loan policy.

If Bowdoin does join the other no-loans colleges, how soon will they implement this? Do you think that the class of 2012 would receive this benefit the first year? (God I'd hope so...)
