Will colleges extend the May 1st commitment day this year due to campus closures?

Just wondering if anyone has heard any news about whether the commitment dates for colleges for the class of 2024 might be changed in light of so many campuses being closed to visitors. We are on the west coast and planned a trip during my daughter’s spring break (week of 4/6) to visit some east coast schools on admitted students days. Thinking that’s most likely not going to happen now. It wouldn’t be the end of the world for her to have to make a final decision without visiting, but it’s hard to think about committing 4 years to a school sight unseen.

Well, you can do an online visit on the college’s web site… and it may be a realistic visit, since many residential colleges are switching to distance / online learning which will probably be the new college experience at many colleges.

wondering about that is well. I visited my top choice schools (was deferred Cornell) so if i get in that’s an easy choice…if not there are a few scholarships I received from schools that I did not see yet…and may consider, but not without visiting first.

admitted student days are so important in our decision making process.

maybe they can extend the May 1st date and host visits over the summer…or I have a feeling some students will deposit at more than one school

What would they extend it to? Managing housing selection, pre course selection advising, waitlist management, etc would be very difficult. An increase in transfers out from the class is likely insignificant IMO. You just have to make a decision with the information available.

Many of us committed to schools sight unseen, and without the mass media options of virtual tours or google maps.

Both my kids committed to schools after less than ideal first visits. One arrived on a Saturday afternoon afternoon, went on a trolley tour with 4 other families (‘over there are the freshmen dorms, over there is the admissions building’). There was a big high school Robotics event going on so while there was activity, it wasn’t the college students. Sunday morning she had a meeting with the coach. Book store closed on weekends, all admissions people off on weekends, no classes to observe.

My other daughter had a big open house weekend planned. We headed there (about 2 hour drive) on a Friday but flooding had closed many roads and it took us 6+ hours to get there. She missed the interviews with departments, the tours, the lunch. The next day we went on a group tour and to a football game - in the rain. She never saw a class, never met other students.

IT WAS FINE.

@Eeyore123 Yes, that’s what I’ve been discussing with my daughter. It’s a great time for practicing flexibility and working with what is, and letting go of expectations. I’m really feeling for the college seniors who may not be able to experience their last semester on campus and may not get a traditional graduation.

@twoinanddone Yes. It will all be fine. Perspective is everything! As I pointed out this morning, she’s getting to choose from some wonderful schools and will thrive at any of them, visiting or not.
