I failed two electives in the second semester of my sophomore year of high school, which just finished. I know colleges like to see improvement on your transcript, and for the core classes I’ve improved and my overall GPA has improved since freshman year by several points. I’m also taking 2 to 3 AP classes next year (junior year). If I improve and am able to maintain an overall average of at least a 90 while passing all my classes during junior and senior year, will colleges still reject me if they see that I failed two electives during my sophomore year?
Depends on the college. If you’re talking about a state university, they still reject people who make all A’s. If you want to get to any type of college, like a community college, you can still get in basically automatically.
What universities?
What major?
What’s your current GPA?
What classes did you take this year?
Any grade of D or F will be a big negative so ask your guidance counselor how you can repair those grades (summer school I assume).
Keep in mind a C in an AP class will NOT help you.
The big question is going to be WHY did you fail? Were the classes too difficult? Did you not take them seriously?
What is your GPA now? Is maintaining a 90 GPA while taking AP classes a realistic goal?
Colleges want students who will succeed. It’s best to look at colleges that you truly think you can do well in instead of aiming too high.
“collleges” are not a monolith. There are over 3,000 4-year colleges in the US. The range goes from exceedingly competitive to requiring a pulse. You need to do some research at the end of your junior year, in consultation with your GC, for schools that you should apply to.
As is often said, your most important choice is your safety. This is a school you can afford and that is pretty much guaranteed to accept you. A lot of kids fill their heads with dreams and spend all their time on reach & match schools, only to find in the spring they weren’t as strong an applicant as they believed and their only option is their safety. The school they gave the least thought to…
Yes you can get into college somewhere with two failed classes. Don’t worry about that.
However, failing two classes in one semester indicates that something went horribly wrong for you that semester. You need to figure out what happened so that it won’t happen again.
If it was home ec and pe type classes there are many schools which take them out of the gpa equation. But my fail classes like that in the first place
Why did you fail?
