I've searched through older threads looking for an answer to this question, but none of them were recent. On the Dartmouth website it says a "Dartmouth College First Year Supplement" is required for all RD applicants, but it does not give additional info. Does this mean there is a supplemental essay, and if not, what does this entail?

Last year, the First Year Supplement was simply a form that asked for name, address, phone, email, high school, academic interests, and personal interests. I recall that they asked for it to be submitted as soon as you decide to submit an application and asked that you not wait until your entire application is ready. It is likely that is used to create a student file in the admissions office. D submitted it as soon as it became available online so that they might recognize her eagerness to attend Dartmouth. She submitted the rest of of application about a month later.

most likely…the essay is the most important part of an application for Ivies

My guess would be not. That’d probably decrease their applications, which already dropped a fair bit last year. Then again, if they’re looking to increase yield, they very well might add the essay. I suppose you’ll find out quite soon.

FWIW, the Dartmouth supplement was one of the very last pieces of my Common App that got submitted (something like a day before the deadline). I have no idea why I waited so long - I don’t think I even saw the thing that requested you submit it early - and it didn’t matter in the end. Dartmouth accepted me, while I was waitlisted at other schools in which I’d shown a LOT of interest. It’s all just a game, ain’t it?

@jnix, you are correct in saying that the essay is an important part of any college application, but OP was talking about a supplemental essay, not the main (Common App) essay.

I doubt it. They emphasize the importance of the Peer Evaluation rather than a supplemental essay. With over 20,000 applicants and the additional Peer Evaluation that most schools do not require, I highly doubt they would add another essay.

Dartmouth does have a supplemental writing section that is not yet available.

I doubt it

I don’t think so
but there is a peer evaluation

How does the peer evaluation work?

here’s a link from the official website:)
