if i write about how i had depression in the past in my essay will i reflect badly?

Depends on how you treat the subject.

First, was this a major problem that you took medicine for, spoke with therapists, etc? Or by depression do you just mean you felt sad/lonely/angsty every once in a while? Because writing about the latter could come off whiney if you aren’t careful. That’s not to say you can’t, but rather you need to tread carefully.

If, however, you faced a serious illness and were able to overcome it or deal with it, that’s more of your classic triumph essay that will work as long as you avoid the usual clich

just stating the obvious here: it will definately put you in bad light with SOME colleges. might be better to just pick something they will all find palatable - probability wise, will just make your chances better

There have been man threads on this so use the search function. Bottom line–colleges avoid potential problems and depression often is a lifelong struggle.

Agreed. Colleges are skeptical of claims that you’re fully recovered, even if you are, because they’ve probably seen too many relapses and they just don’t want to deal with that. I would avoid it because even though it may be a big part of your character, most colleges just don’t want to take the risk.
