Will dropping the IB Diploma program hurt my chances?

Hello,

I am a high schooler going into my senior year, currently knee deep in college applications. I’m currently in the IB Diploma program at my school. I was hoping to take IB SL Film and Creative Writing this year, but was unable due to scheduling. These are classes that really reflect my interests and define the professional areas I want to work in after college. I would be able to take these classes if I dropped the IB program, and would still take AP or IB level classes for the rest of my classes. I have heard that dropping the IB Program can hurt you going into college. I would likely leave a note on my application explaining why I felt the need to drop out of the program. Will this change hurt my chances of acceptance?

If it helps, I’m applying to the Radio/TV/Film major at Northwestern, and much of my application revolves around being creative, so I feel this change would match my application.

What class would you have to drop to go for the Film & Creative Writing class? Most colleges will regard AP and IB as being of similar rigor. I lean towards going for the IB SL Film and Creative Writing, and I think even competitive colleges would understand. You could have your guidance counselor explain it as part of their recommendation too.

I would be dropping IB-SL Business and Management and losing my study hall to take those classes. I’m less worried about the actual classes I’m using than not being able to say “IB Diploma Candidate” on my application. I know there is a lot of weight behind the IB Program with the EE, CAS, and IAs

For Northwestern (and other top schools), it will matter whether your guidance counselor checks the box on the form which says you took the “most rigorous” curriculum available at your school. Meet with your guidance counselor to find out whether they can check that box if you are not full IB.
