Hello,
Will founding a non-profit organization for a harmful disease that effects teens look good on a college application? I've been wanting to do that for a long time, and not just because it looks good on college applications but because I want to help others. Any ideas of how I should go about doing this and what disease I could use? thanks!

Talk to your principal about your idea. He can definitely help you!

if you are passionate about something, it will help.

How passionate could you be if you need help figuring out which disease to choose? I know that sounds harsh, but it certainly seems like your primary concern is what looks good on a college application.

Michelle_b has also started a second thread entitled:

Gee, reading these two posts together, how much do you think that Michelle B is really interested in "helping others" and how much do you think it is all about looking good on the college application?

^^hey, comon, give michelle a break

Michelle, to answer your question, yes it will look very good.

In response to some people who apparently enjoy blasting others...

The colleges aren't exactly terrible at sniffing out resume padders and BS.

If michelle is truly passionate about helping others, it'll show. If she's in it to suck up to colleges, she'll have a great start, begin taking breaks, and kinda fall out of it.

If she is hellbent on sucking up to colleges, she'll burn out sometime and do something else... or hey, if she's not passionate about what she says she wants to do, then she'll have a miserable career... no point in blasting her

You are right, collegehereI_come, I shouldn't have blasted Michelle. Sorry about that. I think what got my blood up was that Michelle is trying to find a disease that effects teens that would look good on her application. I think this shows a total lack of sensitivity towards the teens who actually have this disease --their suffering just serves as a platform for enhancing her college applications.

It depends on what the group you found actually accomplishes.

A girl at our high school a few years ago established the High School Challenge as a part of the Race for the Cure for breast cancer. Her mom, a friend of mine from our synogogue, has had breast cancer twice.

She persuaded a large number of the high schools in our area to participate in the Race for the Cure. The schools compete as to the number of runners who participate; the percentage of the high school that participates; and how much money each school raises in donations. It's huge around here. Within each high school, a lot of the sports teams, academic teams, etc., compete with each other as well.

The girl who came up with this was a winner in all ways--varsity sport captain, orchestra and theater, NMF, excellent student--and had her choice of a number of Ivys among others in the end.

Without her involvement in Race for the Cure, she looked just like every other Ivy applicant. The High School Challenge really made her stand out from the pack.

This is not the sort of thing that can be faked on a resume. She included newspaper articles highlighting her involvement and also information on various civic awards that she received.

But she didn't do this to get into college--she did this because of her passion for finding a cure for breast cancer.

god, we need to ban this person. shes made multiple threads like these, such as "will writing a book look good?" Are you ****ing kidding me? Stop whoring over college admissions

...Some people will sell their souls to get into a good college.

sorry but thats just pathetic.. the only thing driving you to help people is getting into college..? u ask whether itll look good on ur app to start this organization.. does this mean that if it didnt look good, you wouldnt start it? pathetic..

don't do it for the sake to "look good" and in order to get into college. Pulll-eaze.

Is it a flaw in her character or is it a symptom of the times?

In the age of college packagers and high-paid counselors to get into college, I think her mindset is a very common one.
If trends continue, with the activities becoming "necessary" to gaining admission, I think colleges will find they'll have a very sparse pool of applicants with genuine interests rather than getting into colleges.

I know quite a few people who sacrificed things that were their own interest (say, around the house repair and tinkering) for something that seems more impressive for college (say, joining marching band or organizing a clothing drive) but otherwise have utterly no interest within the activity.

Allorion is exactly correct.

With admissions becoming more and more hyper-competitive, many students and parents are feeling the pressure.

If I were an adcom I'd just quit.

why would you want to promote a harmful disease?

Excellent response, NJres -- I can't stop laughing!

if you truly wanted to help others, how it appears on a college application should not matter!

Stop whining about how selfish she is..

Obviously people think about themselves first, and when you're a senior getting into college is going to be pretty damn important.. Who cares if shes starting the organisation to get into a good college - shes just like the other 5 billion people out there who think about themselves first (yeah its not a bad thing)..

Atleast shes going to wind up starting something that might help people.. Whether that is the primary motive or not.. Seems like its going to do a lot more good to the teens out there who have that disease as compared to a bunch of youll sitting behind your computer screens whining about how non altruistic and selfish she is...
