Will How My Body Looks Matter?

For my college auditions, coming up this friday, we will have to sing 2 pieces and perform two monologues as well as have a prepared dance with the required moves. I've been browsing this site and I've seen quite a few people mentioning that their form is important or attractive and will help them get in. I'm not fat but I am not model thin either. I would say my body is relatively normal for a teenage girl but my arms and stomach do carry some flab which I am extremely self-conscious about. I can't afford to buy dance clothes for the audition so I plan to wear a tight pair of jogging shorts and a fitted tank-top and split sole ballet shoes. I won't be very fashion forward or professional but thats all I can afford. My point is, will they harshly judge me on my body? Because I am not model skinny will they look past me or focus on my dance? This is worrying me, because there is no way I can lose 10 to 15 pounds in 5 days.

Don’t worry! Schools are looking for all types and they want diversity. They wouldn’t be able to mount productions if they only selected model thin students.

WishToGetIn, I agree with WaitsALot - don’t worry! On our audition journey, my S and I met lots of kids who had been accepted to MT programs the previous year and there were all shapes and sizes. What matters is talent, not body shape. Try to put your insecurities out of your mind. You need to go into your audition feeling confident, so WORK IT, girl! Break a leg!

Thank you!!! That is a HUGE relief!! I was stressing so bad over this.

Thank you too! I had this vision in my head where all the applicants where going to look like professionals with toned bodies already. Thanks for the relief. :D

I would also note that students wear all kinds of outfits for these auditions. Even though I read a comment in one highly touted audition tips book out there - that you have to wear certain things (no patterns, only solid colors, etc), we found this not true. My D wore patterns and such and still got offers. I don’t think you need to have the best dance clothing - the best outfits - etc - just go out and shine.
