During Orientation I was looking forward to taking a particular Cine class, then I realized it only had one spot open. Needless to say I didn't get in, but what are the chances I'll be able to pick up that class later and is there any thing I can do to help my chances.

Supposedly you can just show up to the class, explain the situation to the professor, and they’ll let you into the class. Especially since after the first few days people switch out of the classes they don’t like.

Which Cine class?

I would first email the professor of the class and see if they accept petitions as some don’t. If they respond and they do, show up on the first day with a petition. If not, just keep checking the schedule of classes as people drop all the time within the first two weeks.

Should I send the professor an email now or wait to when classes open up again and try to get in first, before I email?

I think that emailing now is good because it shows that you are really interested in taking that class. Also, when it comes time to petitioning, it is sometimes better if the professor knows you made the initiative to get in. Sometimes that is the push you need to get you into the class instead of another person.

There are times however, where the professor will say that petitions are not accepted and in that case you will just have to keep you eye open on registration when it opens up again at the end of August.

When you say petition, is there a set form I should follow when I email the professor, or do I kindly ask if I can get into the class.

About petitioning - it depends on the course, if there’s a form you need to fill out, they’ll tell you where you can access the form - usually online, and where to submit it.
