Will I be at an advantage if I don't opt for Financial Aid?

Hi.

I'm an international student from India. My first choice college has always been NYU and I intend to apply ED. However, my cousin who is currently attending USC told me that I'll be at an advantage if I don't opt for financial aid as colleges prefer international students who can afford to pay full tuition. Seeing as financial aid in NYU is so measly anyway, should I take her advice?

Please help.

I’m confused as to why you would consider asking for AID in the first place if you do not need it? It isn’t an “option”. The schools decide what they will give you based on very invasive personal information submitted by the student and parents. If your parents can and will pay, skip that process, regardless of advantage. You already know you won’t get any aid, or not much.

Thanks for your input.

I know it is totally up to the school to decide whether they give me any sort of financial aid. But there is an option for me to say if I’ll be needing it or not. My parents will support me financially but I don’t think it’s wrong for me to try and alleviate some pressure off of them, especially because the cost will be more for me.

Look into merit scholarships. Applying for need based aid will hurt you unless you apply to the following schools which are need blind for internationals: Harvard, Princeton, Yale, MIT, Amherst, Dartmouth. And yes being able to pay fully as an international student will definitely help you.

Thank you for your advice. I won’t be applying to any Ivies, though, since my intended major is Journalism.

does NYU even give aid to intls

Only for freshmen.

I heard from my NYU friends that FA even for domestic students is bad.

I doubt that NYU will give a penny to Intl…that’s why I didn’t bother to apply

My friend (who is VERY wealthy) got a lot of money from NYU (scholarship). He’s international too. Have another friend who got a little bit of aid from Berkeley. International too.

did that int friend of you get merit scholarship?
whats the name of scholarship?
though i know uc berkeley has merit scholarships for oos students

Don’t assume.

For the kids they desire to get, NYU will give money. And fin aid or merit aid, does it matter? Money is money.

As for the OP, if you’re concerned about admission, then there’s no need to apply for fin aid. If NYU really wants you, they’d give you merit money (and in that case, it wouldn’t have mattered if you had applied for fin aid anyway).

Fin aid at NYU is essentially a form of merit aid, considering how few students receive it.

very true…and the stats generally have to be VERY high.

NYU has been known to hand out $25k awards (more or less) to very high stats students that they REALLY want. Often there is a “need component” as well.

NYU either ignored that one student’s wealth, or he is from a country where wealth is often hidden and he didn’t report it.

Thank you for your suggestions, everyone.

I had a long conversation with my parents and they finally got me to stop feeling guilty about putting them in this position. I guess I won’t be applying for FA after all, especially since I won’t even be getting any sort of aid after my freshman year.

??? Why not after freshman year?

NYU doens’t give aid after Freshmen year for international student.
