I have a green card but live outside the U.S. I realize that my chances of being accepted to a U.S college will greatly increase if my application gets considered as part of the local applications instead of international where competition is deadly fierce.
So how long do I have to be in the a U.S high school to be considered as a local applicant? Or simply, if I just apply from within the U.S, will I be considered as a natinal reagrdless of how long I have been in the U,S?
TUITION & FINANCIAL AID
For U.S. Federal financial aid you are considered a “domestic” student and are eligible for federal financial aid and student loans. For public colleges, you are considered an non-resident and would be subject to (usually) higher non-resident or “out-of-state” tuition. For private colleges, the tuition is the same whether you are a resident or not.
ADMISSION
In terms of geographic diversity, some schools might out regard you as an int’l applicant, and some may regard you as an “American” residing abroad.
You’ll be international for admissions and domestic for financial aid.
(If you attend an international school with international syllabus and grading scale, it wouldn’t make sense to compare that record to a traditional American high school student.)
