Will I Even Stand a Chance Now?

Hello everyone,

So as the title suggests, I have already applied for EA at Caltech. It may be a little to think about this, but I'm concerned about how my SATII scores will affect my chances to the university.

During October, I scored 760 on Math II and 770 on Physics (didn't have a great testing day due to the night prior). During November, however, I received my scores earlier this week and got an 800 on Math II and 790 on Physics, a significant increase when it comes to prestigious universities like this. The importance of this, however, is that the university will consider my November scores, and only my October scores (since they came after the EA deadline).

I was looking through posts from previous years on here, and it seems like all of those who were accepted/deferred had perfect Math scores and near perfect science scores. Those rejected had scores similar to mine in October. My ACT composite is a 33, but with a 36 in math.

Basically, I'm wondering if, with these scores in mind, I have a reasonable chance of being accepted. At the very least, I'd like to be deferred so that my November tests can be considered. Would it be beneficial to try and defer myself to RA by contacting the admission office? Or should I leave it how it is and see what happens? Thanks in advance for the help!

Your SAT II scores are fine, and you’re probably looking at things from a skewed perspective of an anxious applicant. Seriously, you won’t get deferred/rejected simply from a 760 and 770 in Math II and Physics, respectively. Now calm yourself and go have a drink of pumpkin spice latte/trudge outside and shovel snow. You’ll find out your results pretty soon.

Can you e-mail admissions with your new results? I don’t think it can do any harm.

Scores are only one part of a student’s acceptance at Caltech. You have to be the whole package which includes your ec’s and your essays. When you look at the accepted students stats, you’ll see that all of the scores were similar, so they don’t really matter that much when you look at the whole picture. That essay and your activities are the important parts

@bookworm I did email admissions with my results. I told them they could use the unofficial scores however they wish, and that an official score report would be coming soon. Their response was that they cannot accept scores after the deadline, but if I get deferred, they can then be considered.

@“aunt bea” Thank you for the reassurance! I did feel very good about my essays, and hopefully admissions will deem my EC’s worthy of admission. I guess I’ll find out later this month!
