I'm a northerner applying to USC and its one of my top choices. I loved the feel of the campus and everything about it, it was a totally great place. Everyone seemed to be extremely nice too when i visted.

My only concern is that the school is in the south and i am from the north and some people are telling me i wont fit in there and that i will be treated differently from the student body because im not from the same area as them. I also had some friends tell me that people in southern schools can be a little exclusive towards northerns and im planning on joining a fraternity if i get accepted and was wondering if the fraternities would deny me access for the soul fact that im from the north.

i really hope these are just stupid rumours that hold no truth what so ever. I really am highly considering going here and would hope that someone would be able to tell me if i would be able to share the same experiences as everyone else.

Don’t worry about it at all. I’m from New Jersey, and I haven’t felt excluded at all. In fact, NJ is one of the top 5 states that out of state students come from. there are plenty of people from up north on campus. In regards to fraternities, there might be a few that won’t want you, but there will plently of them who will. I know people from Maryland, Colorado, etc that are in fraternities.

The school is 40% out of state. No one cares where you’re from.

Some fraternities might be less likely to have you because they’re traditionally southern, but you won’t have any troubles making friends and you’ll find a fraternity that takes you if you decide that’s what you want.

For what it’s worth, I have friends from Los Angeles, Maryland, Ohio, New York, New Jersey, and a few other places.

I’ve actually learned WAY more about the differences between Northern and Southern culture while being here than I ever did by visiting places up North on quick trips. It’s very interesting and a totally eye opening experience.

But yeah. Just don’t worry about it. It might be like that at other schools, but other schools don’t have nearly as many out-of-state kids.

My son is a freshman at USC, he is native to SC, but a LOT of his new friends at USC are “Yankees” and he has even brought some home with him on weekend trips.
