Will I get anything from the FASFAs?

Hey, I got a scholarship where my father died active duty in the Vermont National Guard, and I will be receiving a scholarship that will pay full tuition, and ~900 a month, while in school. I plan to be attending UVM, and I will still have to pay for room and board, books, and ect. My family is lower middle class, and we live in a area in NYS that is low in the cost of living. Can anyone give me an idea if I can get any more financial aid/grants or anything, besides other scholarships and loans?

Thanks!

First of all, I’m sorry to hear about the loss of your dad.

FAFSA doesn’t give you anything. It’s just an application for federal aid.

If your family is truly low income, then it’s possible that you’d end up with a low EFC and get a Pell Grant. You could get a student loan. Anything else would be up to UVM.

Tuition AND $900/month?? It seems like that plus a part time job and maybe a Stafford loan should cover everything even if you don’t get a Pell grant.

Thank you both,
I apologize for my lack of knowledge on the subject, I’m the oldest child in my family.

Yes Tuition AND $900 a month, although its only for 45Months so I don’t know what I will do for Grad School.

I was hoping I wouldn’t have to work while in school with having to focus on a duel major, but I might need to if I want to stay out of debt… I do plan on working over the summer, and I have a job that pays ~11$ a hour all summer, and on breaks, and is extreamly flexible.

I did some of the math and with my savings and the veterans scholarship I was talking about above, I am looking at about $8500 before any loans/grants/other scholarship.

Thanks!

10-15 hours a week of work during the year is nothing really. And it’s a great way to graduate with work history.

I didn’t say this earlier, but I’m very sorry about your farther.

Do you mean you’ll still have to come up with an extra $8500 even after the $900/month plus savings? That must be some very pricey dorm space! If you are lower income you may qualify for a Pell grant. I agree with romani about the work study…especially if you can find an office job or something related to your major (ie. lab work). It gives you a little walking around money and may give you better references/prospects later on.

Don’t worry about grad school right now. If you were considering a bunch of debt, then it would be a consideration.

What is your major and career interest?

I don’t know what you mean by *I did some of the math and with my savings and the veterans scholarship I was talking about above, I am looking at about $8500 before any loans/grants/other scholarship.

*

Thanks everyone, and UVM’s dorms run about $6,500 a year, a meal plan runs about 3,300 a year, I’m estimating $750-$1500 in text books/supplies, and UVM estimates their students expected personal use to be around 1800, so I am estimating having to come up with $8,500-$10,000 a year through out undergraduate school, with out accounting anything except the scholarship I stated above, and my savings.

My majors I am looking at are Business Administration, Computer Science, Statistics, and Electrical Engineering. At the moment my dream job would be running a middle-large sized tech company, although I am sure that will change about 200 times before I graduate.

Thanks!!!

I very am sorry about the loss of your father.

When looking at your college costs it may help to separate the direct billable costs (room and board and fees) from the more flexible costs (books, personal expenses)

Looking at the UVM website it looks like the billable costs for room and board are about $9700 per year. There is an additional $1800 per year student fee (this may be covered by your Veterans Scholarship?)

If you and your family complete the FASA you will automatically qualify for $5500 in loans for your freshman year (this will go up to $6500 in sophomore year and $7500 for junior and senior years… of course, so will the costs for room and board :-/). Depending on your EFC you may also qualify for a Pell grant (up to $5500 per year) and/ or Work Study. I am not sure of UVM policies, but you may also qualify for a Perkins loan or other institutional grant aid.

Because the total of the $900 per month will not be in your hands at the start of the semester, depending on how much you can earn over the summer, your savings, and other aid (loans and grants) you may need to talk with the Bursars Office at UVM to make sure you have a payment plan in place in order to avoid late fees and/ or holds on your account. You will also need to make sure that you have funds available to purchase books and supplies at the start of the semester

If you are awarded work study this will really help with the day to day expenses. Working 10 - 15 hours per week should be doable.

All the best to you! UVM is a terrific school!

During summers, you should be able to earn/save a couple thousand per year to help with books and other expenses.

If your family is lowish income, then you’d also qualify for some Pell Grant money if your EFC is under about the maximum amount…somewhere around 5000…
