Just wondering if any out there know about this from experience! So I want to enroll to school in February and I already talked to the financial aid counselor couple weeks ago and so when I filled out fafsa application I put myself down as single with one child. And I got almost $4k for grant but I still will have a loan for $5k. I was goin to enroll this week but Im planning to elope with my fiancé which right now he is doesn't have a job, no income coming from him. My question is would any one kno if I got married and put status married with child and one income would I get more grant money back? Or would it be less. Or should I just enroll now as single mom with child, before we get married??? I hope someone might know?

What is your EFC?

Plus, it is difficult to change your marital status on FAFSA once you’ve already filed. I think the FA office has to agree to the change. In the old days, you couldn’t change it after you filed, now there is a way, but it isn’t easy and it isn’t for sure.

Sounds like your EFC may already be 0…so it if it, it can’t be any lower, so no more money. You’re only going for half a year, so any aid would be less (except loans).

Be aware that next year, your loans will be split into two semesters, so you’ll have LESS money each semester.

BTW…Just a word of advice…don’t marry your fiance until he has a job.

If she only got $4000 in Pell, her EFC is about $1500.

No, if she is enrolling in February she would not get her full Pell amount, because she won’t attend a full year in the 2014-2015 year. Sounds to me like OP has an EFC of 0, and getting married won’t change a bit. I tend to agree with mom2collegekids- wait until fiance is financially able to contribute to the household to actually get married- but that is life advice, not financial aid advice…

I’m very confused. The OP got $4000 in estimated Pell grant money for ONE semester? How? Half of the $5730 Pell is much less than $4000.

I think she got a combo of grants…maybe Pell and SEOG or Pell and something else (maybe state aid).

I think she may be an EFC 0 and got half Pell and half something else.

I know she mentions Pell in her title, but since the amount doesn’t make sense, I’m guessing that she got around 2800 in Pell and around 1000 for something else.

She may know that Pell can go up to about 5700, so that’s why she may be asking. She may not realize that she can’t get that since she’s only going for a semester.

Another concern that she needs to worry about is that she has been give a year’s worth of loans for one semester. Next year, her loans will get cut in half for each semester, so she (and her fiancé) will need to work.
