Will I make it into UC Engineering or did I blow it already?

I heard it's really hard to get into Engineering as Freshman. I want to apply for Engineering Undeclared or Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering. I'm currently finishing off my Junior year in High School. I'm a Cali resident.

I was in a Canadian school for by Freshman year and am now at a high school in Cali for Soph, Junior, and Senior. Note my Freshman year high school had no weighted gpa system nor any APs!

**Activities:

Most of my activities are religious...my counseler said it could be my "theme."

Taking religious courses online: Junior year second semester and this summer and probably more next year. I have certification for these courses. There is no grading system so either you get the certificate or you don't.**

I lead group prayers once a day at my local center

I'm volunteering this summer (about 36 hours) at my religious center

Last summer I volunteered 60 hours at a Chinese Community Center taking care of children and creating the answer keys for their math booklets.

I was Treasurer for my MSA Club this semester (Second Semester of Junior year) and will be the Vice President for it the whole of next year.

Will I make into engineering at UCB, UCLA, or UCSD?

Can I probably study like crazy and get a 2100 on the SAT...would that do it? 2200? Am I in trouble no matter what my SAT score is? :(

Hmm...I think my UC GPA is actually around 4.2

religion is the focal point of your life, yet you want to go into engineering? i don't really see how the two connect well. your sat and gpa are low for UCB and UCLA. i say reject

I want to go into engineering because I enjoy math/science.

What does EC have to do with major though? I mean if someone is into feeding the poor and playing soccer that shows no inclination towards any Major so why should religion do so?

If I have a 4.1 and I get good SAT scores by studying and I have religion as main EC I don't get why the UC's would dislike that. Does anyone else feel the same way as firefox? If so, explain me how I blew it. Secondly, is religion somehow inferior to any other form of EC? If so, why? People randomly join 10 clubs at school to show off, how is that good? I tried to concentrate and joined one club, became the VP, and will actually try my best at doing something good for the club next year. Also, I have also been a math tutor for the past two years.

My UC GPA IS 4.1 W. Sorry for the confusion above.

Can someone look at: <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=270887&highlight=UCSD%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=270887&highlight=UCSD</a></p>

This person had a 4.2 GPA, a few ECs, and a 2100 and Cal was a match. I have a 4.1 W instead...that's so close!

well, it's like someone who has math/science as primary ECs and applies to a linguistic program. religion counts as a EC. but it can be controversial when all you talk about is how you love god, which might not be the most exciting thing for the liberal top colleges. i'm sure i'm not the only one who finds the heavy religion but want top engineering program combination strange

Alright but how would heavy religion match with an English major? My guess is it wouldn't

heavy religion would match with a major in religion (or whatever it is terminology-ed)...

There is no major called "religion" or anything close to it...

"Theology" or "religious studies" is the correct term for the "religion major."

For those stats, and with your intended major...

Berkeley/UCLA: reach
UCSD: slight reach - match

Your UC GPA is a little weak, as is your SAT score for engineering. Your ECs, though focused and displaying a passion, aren't very strong: people often take courses online / at the local college; people often engage in prayer at church (even leading it); people commonly volunteer like you do; people are often treasurer, etc. of a club at their schools. It'd be better to see your ECs relate to your major: clubs, courses, leadership positions, etc.

"I have religion as main EC I don't get why the UC's would dislike that."

It's not disliked -- it's simply that it really has little to nothing to do with your interests.

"Secondly, is religion somehow inferior to any other form of EC?"

I don't think anyone was implying that.

"People randomly join 10 clubs at school to show off, how is that good?"

Nobody said that was good. It's good to follow your interests and show a passion, while also having leadership roles and doing some community service.

As for your UC GPA, remember the following when calculating it: only the five core courses are counted (English, math, history, science, language); only sophomore and junior years are used; A=5, B=4, C=3, D/F=0; only four year-long courses (eight semesters) get added weight; APs, IBs, and approved honors courses at your school are weighted.

As for this: <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=270887&highlight=UCSD%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=270887&highlight=UCSD</a></p>

That person 1) has higher SAT scores (SAT I and SAT II), 2) has a slightly higher GPA, 3) is in various clubs (which I hope are relevant to his/her interests), and 4) is only a match for non-engineering.

Hope that helps.

It was my fault for not including important information. I'm seriously sorry :$

My goal in life is to pursue both religious and secular studies and be a role model for young American Muslims. I wish to double major by adding "Religious Studies" as a second major when I'm into college. I want keep living in America, where I will teach religion as a hobby and have engineering as a career.

I will do the following for Young Muslim Americans at schools/youth centers (List from a site I used in order to make my goal in life):
Facilitate field trips for high school students to science and technology based organizations, agencies and industries.
Judge science exhibitions.
Offer career advice.
Play Mentoring roles.
Provide consultations in science teaching.
Speak on special occasions.

I will help build engineering projects in poor countries in the Middle East by travelling around the globe. I will use my wealth to give charity to mosques in America and to organizations in America. I will also use my wealth to raise my kids and send them to Ivy leagues to follow a path that will help both the Muslim society and the global society at large.

As much as the above sounds like something I would have made up for my college essays, I'm not posing. I'll pursue my above goal no matter where I end up.

islam, eh? hmmm this could be controversial

Why would this be controversial?

I think firefox means that it is a good hook.

Also, I don't think your W UC GPA is 4.1... you know that ONLY AP classes (NOT HONORS) count as 5 in the UC GPA? Also, UCs do not consider senior grades in their calculation of GPA. What is your rank, that is very important...

As for your chances.... I think you're going to need to get (as I am under the assumption that you have not taken it?) to at least a 2100 to be considered a low reach for UCLA.

Also, it troubles me that you're EC are unrelated to your major, that is fairly problematic. However, if you can explain in your essay about going to the Middle East and stuff, you might be able to save yourself.

i think saasaa means that he's likes you in the romantic sense

no, controversial does not equal to hook. i don't see how saasaa ever came to that conclusion. CC is strange sometimes...

You might want to tone down the attitude, firefox, lest you be banned for rudeness.

i don't really detect any "attitude" in me. in fact, i detect a huge attitude in you. You might want to tone down the attitude, kyledavid80, lest you be banned for rudeness.

(and who the heck has two first names???)

i think your EC towards religion shows passion, and while i don't think it's a hook i think it shows that your concentrated on one thing. however, i think you should have some EC towards math/engineering. the fact that your a math tutor is good. your physics/math scores (on AP/SATII) are good.

But, I think a 2000 SAT and a 4.1 UC is pretty low. If you could get them up, that would be good.

Also, if your going to use that topic (as your essay) about helping others in the Muslim world and sending your kids to Ivy Leagues to make them help the Muslim world....i'm sorry but it's going to sound VERY artificial and made-up. DON'T USE THAT. Unless you can make it sound less sugary and less "I'm going to save the world" like, don't use it. And DON'T say that "I'm not posing and that I'm really going to do this" ---it's going to sound realy tacky.

Sorry to be pessimistic, but I'm just trying to help you.

firefox: I wasn't the one implying a romantic relationship between two people on a forum, now was I?

(Who the heck makes fun of a person's username? It's my first and middle name, if you must know.)

Seriously Firefox, what did you mean by controversial?

(and who names their internet account after an internet browser?)
