Chicago had more violent crime over the weekend than Baltimore and NYC wasn’t far behind. Its an unfortunate reality plaguing urban areas across the country, not endemic to just baltimore
Hopkins is and will continue to be one of the best universities in the world
ugcllg: While I agree that JHU is and will be one of the top universities in the World, I think you are putting your head in the sand if you think there will be no effect. The aftermath of the recent events were bad enough, but now with the rising violence due to whatever (some argue it is police backing off for lack of support), with the prospect of a horrible trial of 6 police officers and the inevitable aftermath–including a probable change of venue and aquittal due to prosecutorial overreach–Baltimore is in for many months of turmoil. This is bound to have some effect on some prospective students thinking about JHU. My own guess is that it will not be a drastic effect, but it will be a noticable negative effect, however that’s defined.
As for the crime statistics, all the cities you cite are worse than anyone would wish, but a reasonable person would have to consider that the populations of Chicago and NY are 4.5 and 14 x greater than Baltimore before declaring that the crime is “worse” in these cities right now.
Kaukauna: you’re putting words in my mouth which is a silly thing to do, in my opinion at least. I made no comment about the affects of the protests on Hopkins, but merely pointed out that many urban areas have experienced a recent rise in violence, not just Baltimore. So I am happy to announce that my head is not in the sand, thank you very much.
Do I think there will be an affect? Yes, to a certain extent. I think some potential students will avoid Baltimore. However, it is important to understand that the campus itself is safe and a great place to pursue ones education.
And call me unreasonable and feel free to reduce this argument to one of relative proproportion, but in my opinion a life is a life. Shootings in the double digits in any city is a tragedy and worthy of notice.
update–as I had said last year
all remaining charges DROPPED…
“you can not charge someone to make a statement or try to make something stick. (the irony that she charged some police with false arrest) and I am not sure but like mike nifong the prosecutor in the duke lacrosse hoax, when this all pans out she may possibly face jail time herself. (nifong only went to jail for about 24 hours sadly)”
the next step should be disbarment and criminal prosecution of the prosecutor ( she will for political reasons probably only face a censure)
when you believe in civil rights which I do you must protect the rights of everyone (including the police) just because a group of people are unpopular, a false narrative is made and grown by the media or a prosecutor wants her 15 minutes of fame in the spotlight… and sadly instead of pushing back on her creepy press conference she gave when announcing these charges , the media fawned all over her and she even did a modeling shoot for vogue

wrongful prosecutions should never occur. and every case stands on it’s own…if a police officer did something wrong in chicago it does not mean therefore the cops in baltimore are guilty. the same for non police defendants. jut because a guy in cleveland robbed a store does not mean that a guy in phoneix is also guilty. every case is unique and wrongful prosecutions must be punished. yes prosecutors should also face jail if they break the law. (judges too)
Baltimore
Population 620,000
2016 Murders to date 169
Murder rate 27.25/100,000
Boston
Population 640,000
2016 Murders to date 19
Murder rate 2.97/100,000
And just for comparison sake
Montreal
Population 1,890,000
2016 Murders to date 7
Murder rate 0.37/100,000
Applications to Hopkins increased 9.4% between 2015 and 2016 to over 27,000 applicants. AND, Hopkins is now in the top 10 universities in the country as per 2016 US News rankings. Anyone who said Hopkins will take a hit, guess what? Ur dumb.
