I am about to be a senior in college this coming Fall and even I can’t believe it will be August tomorrow! For the summer months I got a job on campus in a department in the library and have enjoyed it so far! 29 hours a week all 5 days a week and get paid about $9 an hour so it has added up! It is classified as a summer only position, I have the option to stay in the school year, but I’m not sure I want to stay with the job in the school year or not as I feel I will have a bit of a busy schedule as a senior! I will have 2 online classes as well as 3 morning on-campus classes M/W/F. I will only prefer to work 7-10 hours a week as well as my part time job in my hometown a half hour away I will be working on the weekends, taking on more responsibilities there this year!
As long as you have enough time to properly prepare and do well in your classes, it is OK to keep working. 9 dollars an hour isn’t worth sacrificing your grades.
Can you try it for a few weeks at the beginning of the semester and drop it if it seems like too much? The extra cash is super nice to have. If you get used to working during the school year and you’re looking to go to grad school, is it possible at your school to become a TA or tutor of some sort for a class? That could offer a pay bump and in some places can offer credit, plus the teaching experience is really attractive for grad school applications.
Congrats on starting your senior year! Hoping it’s a great one.
Assuming it’s like many other jobs on campus, you should still be able to accomplish some studying while working. If that’s the case, I think you should work as much as you can while keeping up your grades and having the kind of social life you want. This will mean different amounts for different people, but probably between 10-15 hours per week. I think the extra spending money should make up for it.
