One of the main purposes of attending a traditional college is to indicate to employers that you have obtained a certain level of skill in areas of interest to employers.
With the explosion of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), are traditional colleges going the way of buggy whips and ice-boxes? The evidence seems clear that MOOCs can deliver the level of skill development that is equivalent to a traditional class environment. The biggest hold-up is credentialing and employers openess/knowledge about what the credentials mean or are worth. This is starting to be addressed with new badging systems.
So is the college experience about to be changed by this new disruptive technology? How will students replace the “softer” parts of the college experience, like college parties and activities?
