Will online classes on Coursera get me college credits?

I'm taking several online classes on this website Coursera and they're all free. Some of them are from some really good colleges like Penn, Princeton, and Brown. I'm also enrolled in another free online class run by Harvard on a different website. It says if I complete the course I can get a certificate to recognize that I've completed the course.

Will I be able to get college credit for these classes? And how would I go about asking for credit? Also, do college online courses look good on an application?

Each college clearly spells out what they will give you credit for. Asking here is useless. Ask the college you plan on attending.

You will usually NOT get credit from coursera or EdX. That said, no one can take away the knowledge you receive from those courses and they may add a nice boost to college apps if you have not yet applied/enrolled

Ok, thanks for the info. If I don’t get the credit at least I’ll have some experience in college level courses before going to college.

Yeah and who knows, it may be that because MOOCs are part of such a new phenomenon that universities are unwilling to offer credit. It may be that, down the road, after the sites mature, more and more universities will consider them for credit

It also helps give you a feel for what a class might be like at a specific university, which is an invaluable piece of information in the college decision-making process

Many college departments offer their own placement exams, so even if you do not get college credit for the material that you have learned, a good result on a placement exam can place you into a higher level course, or possibly out of a specific graduation requirement (for example if the college/university will allow placement out of a foreign language requirement because of a specific exam score).

Also, if your college/university will offer you credit or placement for a CLEP exam, some of the coursework you are covering might serve as good review for those exams as well.
