Ok so there are basically 3 students in my class, including me, who are potentially admissible by HYP. Differences among us academically are relatively slim (although I will point out that I am the presumptive valedictorian :D). ECs although different, are pretty much equal in worth. Will the fact that there are 2 other very qualified candidates applying to HYP hurt my chances of getting in? It seems highly unlikely to me that one school would admit 3 students from the same high school.

Oh and they are boys and I am a girl. Dont know if that makes a difference too.

Colleges always say it doesn’t matter, and that no HS has a quota, but I’ve always kind of doubted that, although I have no evidence whatsoever to confirm my belief. At my school, there are usually multiple admits to every top school in the U.S. save MIT every year, although our class size is 1000. So multiple people can get admitted into top schools, but our school is a very large, competitive public. I also think a lot of students from top prep schools get into HYP every year, so there obviously aren’t quotas there. If I were you, I wouldn’t worry about it, as there is nothing you can really do. I do recommend though that you apply to some safety and match schools.

It seems unlikely to you that one school would admit 3 students from the same high school? Are you kidding? There were 2,175 applicants admitted to the class of 2012. Do you think 3 people from the same high school would really be a huge problem? Think about top prep schools like Andover and Exeter that send large numbers of their senior classes to Harvard and Yale every year.

If there were 15 or 30 or 60 of y’all applying, I might be worried then, but only 3? Don’t worry too much.

But you should ALWAYS apply to some other match and reach schools at which you would be happy.

One year 10% of my school’s class of 60-ish got into Stanford. It really doesn’t matter if there are other qualified applicants from your school.

It matters. The prep schools get lots of kids in because the have lots of legacies, recruited athletes and top URMs.Then they also have he same type of requirements as ivies so they have some of the very top students in the Country.

If an ivy takes maybe one per year from your school they are not going to suddenly take 3 unless they are amazing, off the charts cadidates.

Your first line of competition is your own classmates.

So many things factor into this that you can never really tell.

At my small magnet high school this year 17 kids applied to UVA and 14 made it. The rest were waitlisted. Yet at another school maybe only 1 or 2 made it. It depends where you live, past factors, your personal application, and more.
