Will sending a writing portfolio increase my chances?

I've been keeping a portfolio since ninth grade. Should I bother sending it?
Its got about 40 pages. I'm an aspiring international student who wants to get a Journalism degree. I don't know if the writings in it are good enough? Could it lower my chances?

I would recommend sending just a few of your very best pieces in a portfolio. Submit the best ones for publication online or in print, it will look good if you are a published writer. It could lower your chances for very competitive schools if your writings are not all amazing. But it depends on which schools you are applying to!

any other opinions?

Most of the stuff high school students write (especially in ninth grade) isn’t all that great and would be a lot more likely to hurt you. If you’re a good writer, that will come through in your essays.

I have spoken to a few people about art supplements (I will be submitting one for visual art). 40 pages is too much, I have read countless things saying you should be submitting around five pages or so. Submit only your best work and/or pieces that have won awards.
